Win One For...

There are some of us who believe that our team is good right now. And that is true. Our leadership is good, our lines are good, our coaching is good, our system is good, our culture is good and our goaltending is good. Our cupboard is full and robust. We don't need and maybe shouldn't make any changes to what worked.

And there are some of us who have observed how so many Cup teams seem to have not only good leaders and good rosters, but also seem to have some sort of inspirational veteran who is getting his last chance to win. For some reason it feels like this sort of situation works really well as a motivational device to win the Cup, above and beyond winning the Cup for yourself.

I'm in both camps right now, both sides have merit. My worry, which opens up my thought process to the latter of acquiring an emotional playoff leader, is that this team has shown when they win too much, they take the foot off the gas. And teams in the playoffs are too good and want to win too badly not to take advantage of that, like pretty much every loss we sustained this year in the playoffs. But, they did close and maybe they learned plus who wants to deal any guy off the team who won for us? ...so I'm a bit ambivalent.

And it wouldn't surprise me Darryl Sutter was thinking something similar when putting in Gagne at the very end after he was out SO many games.

Thus this topic. What do you guys think?

Also for fun, here's a list of recent Cup winners and their motivational veteran leader...sometimes it's a Cup winner, sometimes is someone who wants to win that first one:

1989 Calgary Flames - Lanny MacDonald
1990 Edmonton Oilers
1991 Pittsburgh Penguins - First time winner
1992 Pittsburgh Penguins
1993 Montreal Canadiens - Denis Savard
1994 New York Rangers - 1940
1995 New Jersey Devils - First time winner
1996 Colorado Avalanche
1997 Detroit Red Wings
1998 Detroit Red Wings - Vladimir Konstantinov
1999 Dallas Stars - Brett Hull
2000 New Jersey Devils - Alexander Mogilny
2001 Colorado Avalanche - Ray Bourque
2002 Detroit Red Wings - Luc Robitaille, Dominik Hasek
2003 New Jersey Devils
2004 Tampa Bay Lightning - Dave Andreychuk
2006 Carolina Hurricanes - Rod Brind'amour
2007 Anaheim Ducks - Chris Pronger/Teemu Selanne
2008 Detroit Red Wings
2009 Pittsburgh Penguins
2010 Chicago Blackhawks - Marian Hossa
2011 Boston Bruins - First time (in a long time) winner
2012 Los Angeles Kings - Simon Gagne/Willie Mitchell (thx FK18)

I'm sure I'm missing some. The "First Time" winner thing means that the team wasn't a sure fire Cup winning team and it was the first time they won it for a while so they weren't carrying any veterans looking for the Cup AND most of the key stars on the team were winning the Cup themselves for the first time.

Hey now, I'm trying to be subtle here!

I'm also rooting against Calgary. So sad. We have the best team in the West, maybe the NHL and I'm still greedy coveting another Cup, another team's only good player...

Ahhh wtf you only live once. Salary Cap dynasty, get it done DS!

This is the point I made in a couple threads recently.

You got to have that hungry guy in that locker room, not only for his desire but to motivate the rest of the team as well. Who better than Doan, who finally got a taste of the third round? You just know this guy is panting for a Cup.

The rich parallel I provided before and will repeat here is Ron Artest in 2010 for the Lakers. It is almost eerie in the number of comparisons and how they fit...the Lakers had just won the title in 2009 and everyone on the team was a champion. Then, as they were losing Trevor Ariza to free agency they signed Ron Artest, who had never won a ring. The guy was a catalyst all season long, the one player motivated to get that ring, and just about single-handedly won two crucial playoff games during the 2010 run, including the Finals game 7.

To draw the parallels even closer to the Kings/Coyotes "feud," Ron Artest and Kobe Bryant had a very testy, 7-game series in the WC semi-finals.

He's the guy. If the Kings want to repeat, I really believe we need that influence in the locker room, and out there on the ice.

It's not greedy if you have won only once in 45 years. There is a lot making up to do, and this team is by far the best team we have ever had that is built for many Cup contentions.

As opposed by the "one-and-done" teams of 1975, 1993, 2001, etc. (1982 was an anomaly, that team sucked...which made it even sweeter beating those a-holes in Edmonton).

After the whole handshake-gate with Brown, I frankly don't want Doan here.

What I'd like to see is finding someone like a Mike Modano, a long-time vet who has won it before, but it's been so long and his career is winding down that you know he'd like to go out on top with one more cup.

Brian Rolston maybe?

If we have to do a trade, Iginla immediately pops to mind.

I'm over it...frankly, the guy pissed me off, especially with his post-game locker room comments (but no one can beat Yandle's comments, see below for ).

But the bottom line is he was very apologetic to Colin Campbell and seemed to be the only Coyote really filled with remorse.

I think as fans we have to have as short a memory as the players do. It's in the past...then again, Smith has to be watched, and very closely. The ****er can commit assault with that stick at any time, if provoked (provoked = letting a goal in).

I second Iginla. He needs one after being so close. He has had a very distinguished career and will fit right in with the locker room here.

Iginla. He's a good player and well respected thruout the league and Sutter likes him. If Sutter likes him, DL will follow.

Doan is a free agent. Iginla requires a trade.

That's easy enough...we sign Doan and then trade Doan and a 2nd to Calgary for Iginla. Essentially getting Iginla for a 2nd rounder

I have faith that this core can win a championship again without signing someone like Dr. Doan.

Let someone else pay him the ridiculous 5+ million he will command until he is atleast 38, maybe Dallas, they seem to love old guys.

...Brendan Morrow? He got to the Stars the year after they won the Cup.
