Interesting pick. He played great in SEL this season and I'm definitely not opposed to Ducks drafting a big goaltender. It does concern me a little bit he didn't sign with the 'Canes, since their goaltending situation is quite similar with the Ducks.

This is the first time since 2004 that the Ducks draft a player who is 21 or older. Last time it was Janne Pesonen, so we'll see how this one goes for us.

well i dont get the hate for him, a few weeks ago on the prospects forum people were talking up how good he is, given his age he may not be far away from being atleast AHL ready, 22 is young for a goalie and we already know how he is developing, worth a shot

He is actually quite athletic, especially for his size. He plays a modern style, and is very calm in the net, that must be his greatest strength. He still needs to work on his lateral movements, they are probably not fast enough for the NHL, but other than that he has no real weakness. Congratulation you have got yourself a goalie that could end up being something special. Give him another year in Sweden and he will be NHL ready.

As far as I know he is the oldest player drafted since 2005.

Given he had the best stats in the SEL last season, and that the SEL is about the same level as the AHL, I would say that he is more that AHL ready.

Great, great pick up. He's already good enough to be a backup. Even though Fasth won the best goalie award in the SEL the other year, most would say that Andersen had a better year. Our future is starting to look solid between the pipes.

For those interested in seeing Andersen; he will be participating in the 2012 conditioning camp starting tomorrow.

He told Danish media yesterday that he was on his way to Anaheim: tv2sport.dk

I'd say he may go back to Sweden unless JDD is moved. We have a logjam in net at the moment (Hiller, Fasth, JDD, Bobkov and Cousineau who was also qualified).

That must sting for Carolina. They really wanted to keep him.

I don't really understand why he signed so quickly...does Carolina have that much depth at goaltender?

According to most Carolina fans, he'd have started the season as the backup with Boucher getting injured. Odd situation.

Hmm, are they hoping that Andersen could be Hiller's backup possibly?

No chance, we would then have 2 one-way contracts in the AHL. I mean if he kills it then JDD would have to be moved (doubt Fasth would because he just signed). I wouldn't be opposed to JDD being moved just unlikely at this point.

Hiller
Fasth

AHL

Anderson
Bobkov
JDD

ECHL
Cousinou(sp)

This is if Anderson comes over and Fasth wins out.

This is going to be interesting. It's a good 'problem' to have.

Pretty sure we are going to trade JDD if we do sign this guy. Is the signing official yet?

Didn't Boucher get injured after Andersen turned down the offer from Carolina?

As I understood it he did not want to sign with Carolina because they wanted him to play in AHL next year, they already had Ward and Boucher so he would most likely not see any time in the big league and he didn't want to "waste his time" in AHL when he could play in SEL at the same time, which many think is a better league than AHL.

He also wants to have a shot at being a starter in NHL in the somewhat near future, which he couldn't be as long as Ward is in Carolina, so he didn't feel like they were the right organization for him.

How is it strange? He wants to have a shot to become a starting goaltender in the NHL in the near future, Ward is on a contract for at least 3 more years and he will probably not go anywhere once those 3 years are done, Andersen would most likely not get more than 5-6 NHL starts this year and spend the rest of the time in AHL. Ward usually plays around 70 games a season so that would leave around 10-15 games for Andersen to play once he gets the backup-job, which would be next season, that isn't the best situation you can be in if you want to develop into a starting goaltender. Andersen wants to get ice-time in NHL to develop and he didn't see how he would get that in Carolina and thus he did not sign there.

Jonas Hiller is as good, if not better than Cam Ward though....if Andersen is willing to start in Norfolk and Fasth falters, then he has a chance i suppose

He´s staying if he´s able to take Fasth spot, otherwise he´ll probably go back to SEL for a season. At least according to our sport news.
He doesn't want to play in the AHL.

here´s the article, guess you can run it trough google translate or something: http://www.aftonbladet.se/sportblade...cle15103792.ab

Last years probably best 2 SEL goalies competing for a spot in Anaheim.

Yes. All I meant was, he would have basically been assured the backup role had he stayed, given the Boucher injury. Obviously there was no way for Andersen to know Boucher would get injured at the time, but the other poster asked if Carolina had some great goaltending depth, which they don't.

i think the more competition we have the better let Anderson fight it out with Fashth for that back up spot both will improve from it and hopefully bring out the best in each other giving us a good option(hopefully) at back up and maybe even help push Hills or at least take some of the load off him

Would like to bump this, how is he viewed in the organization, I know many are focused on Gibson and he has Fasth and Hiller ahead of him. Is he still valuable to the organization?
