With actual ice time rank in brackets as you'll see Bouwmeester ,Wideman & Giordano get plenty of opportunity on the PP with a forward (Tanguay) playing the other point on one unit.
Completely agreed here. Never seen a Butler/Gio matchup and I do wonder what it would be like?...

I agree with this, as much as I don't want Wideman paired with Gio...

Gio and Wideman are our two most offensive d-men. Why put them on the same pairing?

Bouwmeester-Wideman would allow Wideman to play up his offensive game more as Bouw will be able to cover for him. Butler takes a reduced role with Gio and looks better for it, as he isn't a top pairing guy.

Butler is covering for Bouwmeester when he rushes / pinches. That's why. Wideman won't be able to do that - in fact you can look for Giordano to take that role (to cover defensively) if he's paired with Wideman.

Gio and Wideman is perfect. Both have an offensive game. Gio is defensively responsible, wideman isnt really. Should be a nasty pair to have out the pp and everything.

My pairings would be:

Bouwmeester Wideman
Gio Butler
Sarich Brodie

Also, I'm gonna predict that Brodie really pushes Butler for a top 4 pairing spot to play with Gio. And I love the idea of Wideman playing Bouwmeester, I think the idea of it is very well complimented to each other games.

Babchuk is gone.

I agree with this. Still wondering when he will be moved.

I want to see this to start the season (even though I doubt it happens)

Mark Giordano - Jay Bouwmeester
Chris Butler - Dennis Wideman
T.J. Brodie - Cory Sarich
Derek Smith

Personally, I think its about time we see our two best defenders play together at even strength.

The top line got consistently outmatched last season, so in my opinion I think we need to do what we can to keep that from happening again this season. To me this is the best way to go about doing that.

Although I agree with lots of you logic here - that puts a ton of pressure on Butler
Butler would have the most pressure of any player on the entire team in fact if he had to play with Wideman and I just don't think he is ready for it

He had a better year than I expected last year but I think he will find some stability and confidence if he is playing less minutes and with another quality defenceman like Gio

Going in with tempered expectations.

I thought JBo was going to be a 40+ point d-man for us as well, and he fizzled here. Granted Wideman has a better shot, and more in the arsenal for producing offense, and he's done it in numerous NHL destinations.

Hopefully the coaching style is a big reason as to JBo's dwindling offensive numbers, and he regains his touch with a new staff, and some more skill up front (IE guys that can find him sneaking in from the point).

Wouldn't it be nice if we could have at least 3 d-men eclipse the 40 point barrier, in Wideman, Gio and JBo?

...and then there is up and coming Brodie as well.

Yes, yes....tempered expectations.
