Benn probably would have ended up at a PPG if the last chunk of the season wasn't him with BOTH Ott and Burish as linemates. He was averaging a point per game until then. Until the appendix and skate cut he was either with both Eriksson and Ryder or one or the other..I think pretty much always with Ryder outside of the first few games and the last quarter of the season. I think he'll end up with 80-90 points.

Him and Hartnell both helped a lot.

It's hard to say. Benn is sort of a solo act a lot. He's great at that aspect. We've yet to find the guys the gel with him.

I don't think he's quite so much of an "independent contractor" as Razor says. Sometimes last season he was too unselfish. He certainly showed some play making with Ryder and Loui. What I meant with his points slowing down with two grinders is those two weren't finishing anything, and he certainly wasn't going to pick up any of those secondary assists that trickle in from playing with guys who will score. He also wasn't getting zone starts conducive to scoring. All that lead to his PPG+ the first 2/3-3/4 of the season dropping off.

That is the main reason I am skeptical as far as his ultimate upside. Alot of people seem to think he is a future franchise player but I dont think he gets there without making better use of his linemates.

That to me is the biggest question with Benn. I have no doubts that the guy goes hard to the net and can score. I'm not so sure about his vision.

But honestly, that style of his can work well with the right linemates. It actually could be a very nice contrast to Roy (who is like a slightly better Ribeiro).

At this point I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Let's see what he does with quality linemates for an entire season. I don't blame him for trying to do it all himself when he spent too much time having to carry guys like Ott and Burish.

Before Jagr's injury at the Winter Classic, he had 31 points in 32 games. Additionally, Giroux led the league in scoring and was a Hart candidate during the first half of the season. Once Jagr got injured and later taken off the #1 line, Giroux's numbers decreased.

There is no denying G's skill but whoever thinks Jags didn't elevate his and Hartnells game are in for a wake up call next year. Even when not producing, Jagr still would see defensive double teams that would open up space for others.

I'll go on record now saying that Hartnell doesn't score 30+ goals next year and I highly doubt Giroux eclipses 90 points.

I'm just not seeing the lack of vision/not helping linemates with Benn at all. He passes up shots, he had some outstanding set up passes last season. He had a lot of assists. He seems to make his linemates better. He needs to up his goal scoring because he's capable of much more in that regard.

Agree completely. If anything Benn has been too focused on the playmaking aspect of his game which is quite excellent in its own right. How many times did his linemates flub his setups last season? Too many to count.

Benn's per minute production is superior to what Giroux's was at the same age. Benn has every opportunity to be Giroux's equal and more.

Exactly what I was thinking. He should be utilized more as a goal scorer than anything else (offensively).

Of course you know that I agree. I don't think Giroux will see a big drop, because if Jagr had been healthy all year, G would have done even better. You're probably right about Hartnell though. It seems unlikely that whoever replaces Jagr on that line will be as good a playmaker, which will hurt Harts' goal total.

Jagr has always been a player where his team generally doesn't realize just how valuable he is until he's gone, even at his "old" age.

Good stuff. If he ever scores another hat trick, you should post one of these:

I just can't wait until his first salute to the fans at the AAC.

It'll be nuts.

A little more entertainment for the slow hockey summer, probably the most complete Jagr highlight video I've seen from his days as a Pen (but a lot of grainy footage and TURN THE MUSIC DOWN/OFF if you don't like loud metal):

I don't think Jagr saluting this year is a given. He never did it as a member of the Capitals or Rangers, only for the Pens and Flyers. Maybe it is a PA thing.

I for one am already looking forward to all the backtracking from the Jagr-fanboys.

Jagr will probably not be able to play more than 25-30 games without getting injured, and at his age even a small injury will be used as a major excuse for him to not perform.

But he sure will be allowed to play, because in reality the injury won't slow him down, it's just very good to have it as an excuse.
