Have they already taken them off the air..? LOL! Sat down at my desk to listen and cannot get any audio. TSN Toronto and Winnipeg online are working re: I am getting sound but zip for Montreal
My hope for the English sports radio scene in Montreal is that in 13-14 when 990 becomes RDS (then moves to 690 as I gather) is that CJAD adds more sports programming. It would certainly boost its ratings to inherit those listeners for a Melnick as well as the Habs games once again being there. Then maybe a morning sports show once in a while, take advantage of the usual slow weekend radio slots and maybe take advantage of the lack of original overnight programming. Plus Bell buying Astral would mean once the change is approved, the TSN insiders could still be used on CJAD's sports programming. Let's hope because it would be sad and a slap in the face from Bell to see English sports radio disappear altogether in Montreal.
I agree with this. Sort of like 98.5FM did when CKAC disappeared. They added Michel Villeneuve's Les Amateurs de Sports and Bonsoir les Sportifs with Ron Fournier at night.

Even in San Francisco there isn't anybody like him. It's refreshing compared to the overweight tough guy act most (including TM) use.
That Melnick does a lot of Expos/baseball stuff is even better, I could keep up with my two favorite sports just through his show. The guests are great - Nilan and Bill Lee are part of the family when they do their radio spots. I know he's a broadcasting icon in Montreal so there's no doubt he'll find another job, but I hope it's doing his show, his way.
Right on. Melnick never sold out for the money. He has always remained loyal to his employers and to Montreal. He is unique and knowledgeable. Not everybody likes his style, but everybody should respect it.

From Shaun Starr's Twitter feed: Our online stream hasnt been cut. There's a glitch from airing last night's MLB All Star game. We're working on it. #TSN990
From Tony Marinaro's Twitter feed: Been advised our online streaming is back up and running again. http://www.tsn990.ca

Hear, hear.
Living overseas (meaning I don't really get to watch games live except Sat. nights), I came to rely on his blog. His game recaps reveal a man who is no dummy when it comes to hockey.
Pain-staking process, but I'm hearing that if the CRTC gets enough Interventions, they will never allow an English Radio Station in Montreal to be converted to another language, there are just too few left to lose any-more.
I can't see CJAD adding any sports programming. There just aren't enough hours in the day.
I would be curious if the FAN would be interested in bringing in a FAN 990 and swooping in to take that 6% market share without even having to do much start up marketing.
Is the TEAM still around...is it too late to go back?

That could be awesome, but I think it's totally impossible under the current regulatory system. Unless it's a French/Creole radio.
...and that's an absolute shame. I always wished there was a HabsTV with french and english shows and bulldogs games(small or large amount). Would've been nice.

Best of both worlds, really -- as long as it's not Canadien-owned.
We're going to get guys with less connections talking about mostly just the Habs, while forgetting the rest of the NHL. You can also forget about other sports too.
We'll get to hear them whine about such amazing topics like there should be more french speaking guys on the Habs, ad nauseum. We'll also get the amazing insights of Gaston Therrien and that other pleb who talks to the morning show from time to time.
If we're real lucky, maybe they'll have a segment where they ask the opinions of Bertrand Raymond, that utter idiot.
And they can all talk about guys like Patrice Brisebois and how great they are.
The cool thing about the TSN guys was that they'd also talk to the locals and interview the RDS crew. You wont see this coming from the french media, they will ONLY speak with the french. So we'll be limited, much like the Habs limit themselves with their head coach hirings.

I love the french media and french coach hiring. I could care less about the english media.

That's a big problem. The French media have connections to the Habs and nothing else. They're a massive step-down from the TSN guys.

just wondering since i've never listen to TSN 990, when they interview locals and Rds crew, are they doing it in english or in french?
thaks to crimsonskorpion for the info. so my answer is, if RDS990 doesn't have a smart enough producer to make sure that they do interviews often with Pierre Lebrun and Pierre Mcguire, two guys who speaks french, then that is pretty dumb, but there is no reason to interview Bob McKenzie or Darren Dreger as they would not be able to carry the conversation in french, you already have to translate players comments, i can't believe they would start to translate reporters intervention, it wouldn't serve any purpose.... except maybe once a year on a special subject...

why oh why would, i don't know, Jay Feaster or Scott Howson as connections with a french reporter from Montreal, why would they have a relationship? Tsn is an english network covering a sport which everything is in english and with a national, coast to coast budget, RDS who covers mostly french quebec doesn't have the same budget and like it or not french reporter don't have the same connection with english execs from around the league
i'm pretty sure that an NHL reporter from the Moscow Pravda have great connections with Ovechkin and Malkin probably not so much with Howson or Feaster either....
CRTC rules and ratings did them in. It's market share was ridiculously low for a radio station. No owner would tolerate a 3.3 market share. That is plain sad.
