For a guy they got for nothing (Sulzer - free agent signing) that couldn't crack the Canucks lineup.

It happens. A player that doesn't work out & wasn't going to work out with a club gets dealt for a similiar player (from the Sabres POV - MAG).

And how is Hodgson's future prospects any better seeing as he's actually likely *dropped* further down the depth chart as a result of the Sabres 2012 draft selections. Another case of a team trading a player who might have a better chance with another team (eg., Kassian for the Canucks & Hodgson for the Sabres).

Yeah he's what 21? Played 40 or so NHL games. Probably safe to write him off...

The trade was Gragnani for Sulzer. Sulzer's played well for Buffalo in his time there and was re-signed, so you could say they won the trade. Vancouver didn't really lose much though. Sulzer was a UFA at the end of the season, and it's pretty unlikely that he would have re-signed with the Canucks given that he was a healthy scratch for most of the season, and would have been no better than #7 on the Canucks this season.

Yup. He's much less of a defensive liability on the wing. He can absolutely dominate in the AHL as a D though.

1) Kassian could be a 3rd liner now; he projects as a 2nd liner long term.
2) Vancouver didn't know what they were giving away in Sulzer (nor did Buffalo really know what they were getting), imo, because he never got a real chance to play there, or in any other city he's been in. He would've likely walked as a UFA anyway. Injuries hit right after he got to Buffalo, and he had great chemistry with Ehrhoff right off the bat. That said, he had a good run at the end of the season, but there's no guarantee he can maintain that level of play through a full season. (I mean, Grags was "good" in the playoffs in 2011...) May or may not stick -- that's why his new deal is only 1 year.

Wow, he must not be viewed very highly in the league. I thought he could definitely get a one-way.

There also must not have been very many interested teams as Carolina would be one of my last choices if I were him.

That's not against Carolina, it's just that they already have a ton of players with his skill-set and most are arguably better than him.

2 way deal.... seems right.

He should just be a forward.

Surely, this must be the worst signing of the summer.

You could put this guy on a 4-way contract and it'd still be bad.
Gragnani is truly one of the worst defenders in the game.

Being afraid of contact, tentativeness and just terrible defensive awareness does not equate to a good defenseman.

He could provide a nice boost to the PP though, as long as he isn't making tape to tape passes to Claude Giroux's stick for a breakaway.

This guy was probably the missing playmaking winger on Kesler's line.

The Canes don't spend nothing on him in the A due to 2 way. If he does make it, than at least he's proven to be an NHL Dman

I think the Canucks would have resigned Gragnani if he would have agreed to a contract something like this, but apparently he threatened to take the Canucks to arbitration. No biggie....he's a player that could stand to have some more seasoning in the AHL, but has enough upside that teams will continue to take chances on him.

This guy's great on one end and brutal on the other.

Problem is, he doesn't even bother trying on the other end too.

More AHL seasoning? He spent 4 full time years there and was an AHL dman of the year winner. My man is AHL seasoned. How much more would he need?

And that's not even bringing up his infuriating tendency to go on "walkabout" whenever he feels the mood come on. "I'm on the point on the PP. What should I do? I know! Leave the point and meander over to the opposite corner! I'll say hi to Hank Sedin! *skates* Hi Hank! Why are you scowling at me?"

Yeah. He's got career AHLer written all over him imho.

Vancouver let him go after Gragnani said he was going to take the team to arbitration after the season he had. Vancouver didn't call him back after that.

At least MAB does something well though.
MAG is awful at ES and on the PP, which is supposed to be his specialty.
His shot sucks and his decision making is awful and delayed so he mostly just kills PPs.

He's money in the slower AHL though.
It's hilarious to hear that he wanted to take the Canucks to arbitration and tells me that he'll likely look to Europe soon for more money, which is where he belongs.

Very good signing for Carolina. Worst case scenario, he can be a 6th/7th Dman & PP specialist, and give the Canes another good offensive weapon and less tempation to rush Murphy into the line-up if he's not quite ready. A low-risk/high-reward signing.
