Slump behind him, Adam starts fresh

http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/sa...icle943116.ece

Quote:
"At first, [being sent down] was pretty tough to accept. I wasn't playing the way I wanted to be at the time, but it still caught me a little off guard," Adam said this week during Sabres development camp.

He finished the year with Rochester, but had his share of struggles in the AHL as well. He finished with 13 points and a minus-2 rating in 27 games with the Americans. Adam said he felt his attitude and effort were good but he just couldn't get going.
Quote:
Adam spent the first five weeks of the offseason in Arizona to get away from the game and mentally refocus himself. Since then, he's been working out hard in his native Newfoundland with trainer Bob Thompson, alongside NHLers like Tampa Bay's Teddy Purcell and San Jose's Ryane Clowe, the same players he's been working with since he was 18.

He plans on carrying that work ethic into training camp in September determined to make the Sabres roster again.
Quote:
"It's not going to be an easy team to make," Adam acknowledged. "Whether they want me to play on the wing or they want me to play in the middle, you know, whatever it takes."

"I don't feel like one position is more suitable for me, but I feel comfortable at both and I'll play where ever Lindy asks me."
Quote:
"Last season was interesting ... but you learn," Adam said. "I know nothing should be given to me and I'm going to have to earn every stripe back."
Nice to see he is refocused and looking to put the work in to get back on the team. I know some were worried about this.

Wasn't the main criticism from Amerks fans that he looked like he didn't care? Or am I conflating that with Kassian's struggles?

I'd feel a lot better about next season if he figured out a way to become a regular and center the third line.

Some of them felt he had a crappy attitude and work ethic after he was sent down. Rhett refered to him as Lazy Luke.

Not to be smart ass but which line is that?

I'm assuming you mean centering Pommer? With FES and Hodgson/Vanek on the other lines.

Well, I assume it to be "the line that doesn't have Ennis or Hodgson on it". Most likely to have Leino, possible Pominville or Ott depending on how they want the lines to look (Pommer would make sense with the idea of physical grinder/playmaker/sniper [G/P/S] per line)

Vanek-Hodgson-Ott (S-P-G)
Foligno-Ennis-Stafford (G-P-S)
Leino-Adam-Pominville (P-G-S)
Gerbe-McCormick-Kaleta (typical energy line)

I don't even really care who he'd play with, I'd just like having another firm center heading into the season. If he did play, I'd probably go with:

Foligno - Ennis - Stafford
Vanek - Hodgson - Ott
Leino - Adam - Pominville

If Adam makes it, I'd be interested to see:

L-H-P
F-E-S
V-O/A-A/O
K-M-G

In my vision..... I don't see him making the team ...or being part of the future in this organization.

I think he still has a shot as an NHL'er ...just not on this team.

Unfortunately, Adam isn't physical. Otherwise, I like the layout.

He does have size though. Maybe Ruff can put an emphasis on using it, especially along the boards. But it's the best we've got right now...

Plus having Pommer (and to a lesser extent, Leino) could help cover for his defensive weaknesses.

I have high hopes for Adam making the team. I want to see him "WOW" us during camp like Tropp did last season. Needs snarl (I hate this experssion but it's fitting) in his game, and he needs to engage with more hitting. If he doesn't bring a tougher mental attitude into camp he will wither away in the AHL all season. If he plays pissed, I say he starts the season as the 4th line LW and opens the door for bigger and better things at the NHL level.

I was impressed with his game during the first 10-12 games and there was also a decent stretch when he played on a line with Kassian and...was it Ellis? I think that was the line, it was good for half a dozen games or so. But man, he's gotta bang some bodies and really want the puck more. That was sorely missing from his game even when he was playing well.

I believe Ott would play LW and Vanek would slide over to RW. I doubt Adam makes the team unless Ruff has no other choice at C, but if so Adam would be the "S" on that line since his shot is his best skill. Pominville would be a little "P" and "S", while Leino would actually be the "G" due to his excellent board work the last six weeks, with a little "P" thrown in.

It may very well turn out that Regier waits until after camp to decide on that 3rd C spot. With Grigs, Adam, and even Porter or Girgs being outside possibilities. If...IF...Adam can prove himself enough to start at C I wouldn't be too unhappy with that position's lack of experience when they have five wingers collectively for a veteran presence. We as fans will just have to expect some major mental gaffes along the way, but if the talent is legit we'll be looking good in a short year or two.

I still feel he's better fit as a winger. Time will tell.

Counting Leino as grit is very sketchy imo. Matter of fact, which version of Leino we're going to get this season remains so uncertain that I wouldn't dare predict anything. But on his "GPS" line in Philly, he was basically "the Pominville."

I'd say the roster today just doesn't have the 3rd top-9 grit player on it. They either make an acquisition or they accept it and roll a line more finesse-based than the others this year.

It's so cute to see posters discussing lines as though Lindy uses them.

I left out a few thoughts, which included the caveat of "depending which Leino shows up". But for the sake of the rough "GPS" titles, I thought Leino fit that "G" mode pretty well down the stretch.

A lot of coasting. Not getting back into the play. Looking uninspired and lackadaisical. Pulling up on checks. Getting outmuscled by guys half his size. It's one things not to score, but he looked uncommitted to playing hockey most nights after they sent him back. I would have liked him to work through his scoring woes and grind it out a little more. Hopefully he rebounds because he has great hands...but he definitely put a seed of doubt in my head with his play in Rochester.

I'm amazed posters still cling to this nonsense.

When a line or a pair of forwards have success together they stay together. The only time a success line or pairing gets broken up is if the team is struggling late in game and needs a spark, if there was an injury or if the team is slumping and they need to shake up the lines.

Truth.

And according to Lindy, the team needs a spark or shakeup every other period.

Last summer all of the eggs were put into Leinos basket, this year really would be nice if Adam can step up. I have my doubts though..
