How does NBC put up an article about this before our beat writers or even the Panthers official facebook/twitter mention this? Are they all too busy watching the ESPYs?

They might have other assignments. GR might be doing the Marlins and Harvey is busy speculating and making things up.
They misdiagnosed him. Mueller missed an entire year because of concussions. David Booth might be a better comparison if he also missed a whole year.
Pittsburgh center Sidney Crosby, out since Dec. 5, is suffering from a neck injury and a concussion, according to a statement from the team.
"The diagnosis of Dr. Robert S. Bray, a neurological spine specialist based in Los Angeles, is that Sidney Crosby had suffered a neck injury in addition to a concussion. Dr. Bray reports that the neck injury is fully healed. Those findings will be evaluated by independent specialists over the next few days.

They originally thought it was just a concussion and he was having concussion symptoms when it was really his neck that was lingering. Crosby doesn't have concussion problems like Mueller.
Anyone else coming out of panic mode and back into reality yet?
I actually was never in panic mode. Figured the incoming kids might take some time to learn, but by season's end they'd be an upgrade over what we had.
Now we have additional insurance and given the one year deal, it's low risk. If he doesn't pan out he won't burden the team's cap beyond this season. Also makes him very tradeable at the deadline if the Panthers don't need him anymore.

And Crosby missed almost 11 months... ? And all three of the hits in question (Steckel, Hedman and Krejci) weren't exactly Richards-esque. I don't see a massive difference, other than Crosby returning to form fairly quickly once he got back on the ice. But they're not comparable players in any other way.

Crosby was out because of a neck injury. Mueller was all concussion. I'd be willing to speculate that they were much more cautious with Crosby. He's their franchise.

Yes, I know the story.
He had at least one concussion and prolonged post-concussive symptoms.
