not to mention a way shorter, less intense season.

i remember an interview where daigle likened playing in switzerland to being a regular joe with a regular job.

With the cap at 70 million that is 2.8% which is a good deal for a player that can play any forward postion as well as 2/3rd line.

that doesn't really surprise me. combine the relative anonymity with the high (and i'm talking really high0 cost of living and they're probably feeling pretty average.

probably a really nice change of pace though. great place for families, can extend your career, keep healthy, less travel, more time at home etc. seems like the players who go there tend to stay there.

Burke started global warming, too. And it makes a LOT of sense!

Depends. The best players of the NLA earn (as far as I know) something around 500'000$ or even more per year. I know about Cristobal Huet, Roman Wick and Raphael Diaz (before he was traded to MTL), who earned that kind of money.
I'm sure that guys like Petr Sykora (Yes, there is another Petr Sykora playing in Switzerland), Josh Holden, Reto von Arx or Jaroslav Bednar have comparable salaries.

With 500'000$ per year (~42'000 per month) you live a VERY good life in Switzerland. A "normal" person earns something between 4500$ and 10'000$ per month, so ca. ~60'000$ - ~130'000$ per year (Most companies here pay you a 13th month).

It was Cliff Fletcher who was the gm at the time, not Burke.

Wellwood has expressed his discontent in playing hockey outside of NA. He didn't like his experience, and implied he won't go through it again.

That somehow made Wellwood fat and lazy like the poster said was Burke's fault?

There is big difference between living in Russia and Switzerland. And even more between Mytischi and Zug

I think Gardner gets 840'000 and Domenichelli around 650'000, but these are the highest paycheks in the league

He might be worth 2 M per to some team, but if that was the case why hasn't he signed yet? I liked Wellwood with the Jets last year has he showed to be very versatile with great hockey sense and he sure wasn't fat and lazy. I have no doubt he could still play a role on the Jets. However since the end of last season the biggest thing you hear from Jets management is that they need to get bigger and tougher to play against. I think the Jets played too many soft road games last year. Everyone the Jets have signed or drafted this year is 6, 2" + or built like a brick **** house. Heck they even drafted a Sutter. That is the direction Chevy wants to go in. That being said Wellwood is worth signing year by year but at your price not his.

Wellwood is a poor man's Doughty according to Ron MacLean.

I'm kind of surprised he's not getting many (any?) offers.

He's a bit of a journey man at this point, but he put up career numbers last year. Every team seems to be looking for a top six (ie. ~20 goals, ~50 points) forward.

And if I recall housing and a car are usually provided. Also don't forget they usually come back to North America in the off season.
