Which hockey players have the best back story?

I just finished writing a piece about the 2008-09 and 2009-10 Windsor Spitfires that won back to back Memorial Cups with a front line of Taylor Hall, Adam Henrique and Eric Wellwood. They had a tremendous story involving a teammate who died as well as defying the odds over and over on their way to two championships.

This story got me thinking, what other hockey players have good back stories that we don't know about. Feel free to share.

Despite Alex Burrows attitude on ice, I think his story of making it into the NHL is pretty awesome.

Tim Thomas. Parents selling their wedding rings so he could play hockey and all that.

I recall that Glen Metropolit had a great story.

EDIT - found story reposted: http://forum.canucks.com/topic/21022...en-metropolit/

Also agree with Burrows.

Wasn't Antti Niemi a zamboni driver in Finland before he got noticed by scouts?

Surprised it took this long for someone to mention Bobby Ryan.

I've also got to go with Burrows. Few people get out of the graveyard that is the ECHL, let alone do as well as he has.

Tim Thomas did, until he destroyed it by trying to be a political hero & then proceeding to quit on his team.

I don't know about "best back story" but Downie's history is pretty compelling.

Chris Phillips had to mature very quickly.

Since the age of 10 years old, his mother was paralyzed and his father was legally blind.

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/m...0/ai_18433316/

Quote:
"After doing countless interviews, Chris Phillips quietly leaves Kiel Center in St. Louis after the draft, pushing his mother's wheelchair. His father follows with a hold on Chris' belt loop.

You never know what can happen," Phillips says. "It makes you think a little bit about what's really important in life. What happened to my parents isn't something I'd wish on anyone. But I think it helped make me a better person."

Ovechkin's history regarding his brother and the fact that he was nearly taken out of hockey as a kid is interesting to me.

Scott Gomez's home planet was about to explode when his father sent him to earth in a space capsule. He is the last surviving member of his race of elite hockey gods.

Bobby Ryan's story is pretty incredible, part of the reason he is one of my favorites along with his play style.

Yvon Lambert from the '70s Habs first put on a pair of skates at age 14.

Wasn't the Spitfires top line Taylor Hall - Adam Henrique - Justin Shugg? The 09 - 10 lineup was something like:

Taylor Hall - Adam Henrique - Justin Shugg
Eric Wellwood - Scott Timmins - Zack Kassian
Kenny Ryan - Greg Nemisz - Dale Mitchell
Adam Wallace - Stephen Johnston - Derek Lanoue

Sorry for being nitpicky - just don't want your article to be wrong!

Curtis Joseph.

Teenage girl gave him up for adoption. Was forced to put on goalie equipment so his brothers/friends could shoot the puck. Couldn't afford hockey. Went undrafted. 4th all time in NHL wins. (454)
