McNabb working hard to beat roster odds

Brayden McNabb can count. He knows the number of defensemen above him on the Sabres depth chart is greater than the number of available roster spots.

But he's not letting that affect his mentality this summer as he prepares for training camp.

"I know I can play in the NHL and I believe in myself," McNabb said this week at Sabres development camp. "[The AHL] is not what I want. ... I'm going out still trying to prove myself and I'm going to work as hard as I can and do what I can to try to make this team."
I would be surprised if there wasn't a deal that moved a D or two out and McNabb is on the roster to start the season.

Really hoping McNabb wins a spot at training camp. I really think he can and is currently a better dman than at least one of the guys ahead of him

Well, he's certainly better than Weber and Pardy, and better than the pre-Sabres version of Sulzer--we'll see if Sulzer maintains that level this year--but I don't have any problem giving him huge minutes down in Rochester for another 30 games or so. I think the organization's plan--best laid plans and all that--is to keep Leopold around for a little while in case of injuries, recall McNabb around the midpoint, and then maximize Leo's value at the deadline (if Sulzer is still performing well, and one of Weber/Pardy can find a home on the third-pairing).

?

Sekera-Myers
Sulzer-Ehrhoff
McNabb-Regehr
x Pardy/Weber

Personally, I see McNabb being in a battle with Weber for the 7th spot with Pardy as #9 in the depth chart.

Given McNabb being waiver eligible, that's why I think he heads to Rochester.

But, I think McNabb is the guy that gets Regehr's roster spot in 13/14.

Really, really hoping he makes the team as I think he'd add a whole other level of physicality to our back end. But after tonight, I think he's got some work left to do. Skating still needs improvement, as does some parts of his mental game. Did anyone else come away feeling like this after tonight or am I just expecting too much out of the guy?

i am going to love watching McNabb play in the NHL in a couple years, but I hope he stays in the AHL for most of next season.

If Ruff balances his dminutes evenly, these pairings would be fun to watch:

McNabb-Myers
Erhoff-Leopold
Regehr-Sekera

M&M play together for the next 10 years and all is well.

That said, with Regehr another year older, and players like Erhoff, Sekera, and Myers on the back-end, I expect at least 2 of the pairings to get substantially more time than the 3rd.

Sekera-Myers
Erhoff-Sulzer?
Regehr-Leopold

I do like the idea of him joining the team midseason, though...

I expect McNabb to be the victim of a numbers game. Pardy goes to the AHL.

Leopold-Myers
Sekera-Regehr
Ehrhoff-Sulzer

I see no reason those pairings will change.

IF Leopold is dealt, then I slide McNabb right in Leo's place. I'm not sure if it would be too many minutes, but I do think they could work well together.
