But we could have a "Darkest day in Bruins History" thread though.

Anyone remember that on the Habs board? There were people tracking their plain, it was hilarious.

Why would we be handing HIM a spot over someone homegrown? I don't care how cheap he may be.

No worries Spooner will do that for the B's

Caron wll have to take a step up, because he's not going to have that spot handed to him. I'd say it's a pretty fair bet Spooner and Knight (and possibly Bourque) will be fighting him tooth and nail for it.

If it turns out that Chiarelli is aiming for the kids to battle for that third line spot, it could be a very interesting training camp. I'd prefer that myself to signing an iffy free agent, but that's probably just me.

I guess signing 2 players in 6 years is a "chub" now.

ex-Hab signings

Ryder (paid off in the playoffs every year he was here)
Pouliot (good value signing and solid 3rd liner)
Claude Julien (best coach on the market at the time)

If he can pull that kind of value out of ex-habs, Chia can recruit all the ex-Habs he'd like.

Kate,

I agree with you that is is too early to start guaranteeing it's Spooner vs. Caron for 3rd line LW, but you have to admit the options are running out. It seems like at this point the best they're going to be able to do is bring in some veteran competition for those two. Players like Semin and Doan are both there and I would love either of them. I just don't know how likely it is we sign either. I hope Chia surprises me.

They at least have to sign a veteran to pose some competition. I'd like to see Caron make the jump (he had a few great games last year and showed promise) but I don't know if that is going to be enough to play a full season.

I think most people haven't and that's why they are so quick to throw him into trade proposals.
At this point where he's shown improvement and a real good development camp, I hope Chia holds on to him or makes sure the return is worth it. But IMHO he shouldn't be looked at like a prospect that may or may not make it, but a guy with a top 6 ceiling who looks more than likely to achieve that.

That's fair.

There just seems to be a general sense of doom and gloom that because nothing has happened yet (less than 2 weeks into free agency), all bets are off. Sure, some options are off the table, but of the guys that have already signed how many of them were a) ever true options in boston and/or b) a solid fit for what is needed?

I'd prefer to ride it out until prices drop a smidge, and hold out for the right deal. It's a fine line to walk because you run the risk of not doing anything, and I recognize that, but I'm not super broken up about anyone that has been signed except for maybe Whitney.

Moral of my story, in the words of Conan, keep cool my babies.

Oh ya, I'm not panicking. I was just referencing Mueller getting a 1.75 m deal. I will admit the only players I really wanted here that have been signed so far are Whitney (but not for that price/term ) and Mueller, especially for that price. I am interested in seeing what Chia can do and I actually do like Caron, it's just that a lot of the veteran options left aren't exciting.

He could always just sign Darche before he announces his retirement.

Spooner is going to be a great NHLER. But he's not ready right now. He's not strong enough physically or mentally. He's not strong on the stick and he needs to work on his defence. Once he does that (I think a year in Prov with an injury call up) is more likely. Once he works on those flaws, he will be a great player. He's got all the skill, but he's not ready just yet. Penciling him on the 2nd line this season is too quick.

man this off-season is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO dull!
I can't wait till the season starts. free agency has slowed down to a crawl and the trade market is virtually non-existent.
I wish something would happen...Semin, Nash, Doan etc...SOMEBODY SIGN SOMEBODY!!!

I'm glad Chiarelli seems to have abandoned his ex-hab fetish and has moved to ex-leafs.

Kostitsyn is a guy that intrigues me, as I said in a previous thread...

Quote:
He's had some maturity issues in the past so there's certainly some baggage there they'd have to be prepared to work through, but you'd like to think that languishing in free agency without a job would be a humbling experience, and I think this coaching staff and the leadership group here is pretty good at getting guys to fall in line and buy in.

If they can get through that, we're talking about a pretty talented player: he's big, he's fast, he can be nasty, he's got tremendous 1on1 skills and a sizzling shot. He's a lefty with power play skills who can play either wing and can slide into the top6 if necessary. His career average is 20+ goals and nearly 50 points per 82. He overlapped with Julien in Montreal so there's some familiarity there too... And he'd probably sign a cheap, short term deal.

He wouldn't have been my Plan A, or B... OK, so he's more like a Plan F-U, but that's where we are.
