Everyone is gonna demand a NTC/NMC from DW now... Colin White and Handzus got one so obviously Vlasic is gonna ask for one. Stuart got one I believe. Not counting the RFAs and young players, 95% of DW's recent signings have gotten NMC probably lol. Instead of signing people for really long contracts and possibly hamstring the team for a long time, DW is handing out NMC like candy so we can't trade players if they turn out to suck.
I have to say, while I dislike many of DW's moves in terms of signing players and deadline day moves for grit players, I do really like the contracts he gets out core to sign, nothing crazy long, no inflations, just solid 3-5 year deals at good value (for the player and the organisation)

A NMC doesn't mean you CANNOT move the player, it just means it requires his approval first. If his role diminishes on a team because he isn't living up to expectations, i'm sure management and the player can work something out rather than being buried in the minors

Not with an NMC. Press Box is the only threat. The only recent NMC forced was McCabe's and the situation was ugly with his agent basically telling Toronto to buy him out.
There have been cases of persuading an NMC holder but they are few and far between. The AHL threat is there for NTCs.

Right, I got mixed up between NTC and NMC. Thanks easy

NMCs or NTCs aren't something Doug Wilson has pioneered, most GMs hand them out like "candy", as you put it. According to http://www.capgeek.com San Jose has seven players with either an NMC or NTC (including Vlasic's extension). Five of those players were signed by Wilson.
For a team that's made the playoffs since 03-04, locking up players and establishing a proper core, means you have to show, from management, that you want those players here. It shows a level of certainty in the locker room as well. People like to harp on about Colin White and Michal Handzus getting an NTC and NMC, but it's not as if they were committed for a long time. White was a one year deal and won't be re-signed, and Handzus is done after this season. They're not the mountains people sometimes make them out to be.
As for future extensions in the next couple of seasons, I can only see three more players that should receive an NTC or NMC: Clowe, Pavelski, and Couture. That would not be a bad thing at all, locking up the top-6.

Clowe and Pavelski will be UFAs after their current contract. Couture will still be a RFA (and ineligible for NTC or NMC until he's UFA-eligible).
Why are ppl complaining about NTCs? Apart from 1/2yr contracts, the only players with them are Patty, Jumbo, and Burns; all of them being franchise players. Havlat and Boyle had theirs before they came here. You think DW is bad, look at Calgary's roster.

A player can still have a clause kick in once they become of UFA age right? Say if Couture gets signed for 7yrs, his NMC/NTC will only kick in once he's no longer restricted. That's what I assumed with James Neal's contract.

I am totally cool w/ Pickles and his NTC/NMC. Means that DW wont be shipping him in some deal for Nash, though as I type this I realize he could be dealt this year in theory but DW wouldn't pull another Setoguchi would he? would he?
