A #8 seed knocking off the number 1, 2 & 3 seeds and then winning the championship 4-2.... going 16-4 overall in playoffs? Losing only 1 game on the road?
What other sporting event in the last year was that big of an upset?
Hopefully, this is just the start of the Kings playing well and being an expected high PO seed, so when they win, it won't be viewed as an upset.
Hey, I was ecstatic with the 5-gm "upset" of Vancouver - the rest was just gravy!
That's why I have mixed feelings about the award.
It's not really an upset when the team dominates every series like that. Clearly, the Kings were the better team in every single series, and they were actually favored in rounds 3 and 4.
Sure, if you look at it from a "pure standings" point of view, #8 seed, knocking off #1,#2,#3, yada yada etc. then of course its an upset!
But if follow hockey closely (not saying you don't, of course, I'm saying a lot of fringe fans are like that), then you will know the Kings underachieved for ¾ of the season and then just kicked everyone's ass after that (like they should have, all season long).
In that sense, no way was it an upset.
But as I said above, its nice to be recognized as a champion, anyway.
Miami winning the best team? Now that was a joke but then again so are the ESPYS! Who were the other Nominies? I don't even care to watch an award show that gets everything wrong.
The Kings beating out the Miami heat as best team would've been the biggest upset. All things being equal, if you look at the teams up for best team, the Kings doing what they did in the playoffs trumped what the star filled favorite Heat did...by a landslide.
