Penguins sign Benn Ferriero, 1 yr - 700K, two-way deal
The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Benn Ferriero to a one-year contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.
Ferriero’s contract is a two-way deal worth $700,000 at the NHL level.
Ferriero, 25, has spent parts of the last three seasons playing for the San Jose Sharks, including 35 games in 2011-12, when he tallied seven goals and eight points. Ferriero also appeared in 20 games last year with Worcester, the Sharks’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. Ferriero amassed 20 points (9G-11A) in 20 games with Worcester.
I can't believe BenN is making more than Wolski...Anyway, great for him. He hardly every produces a goal, but when he does, it's always something spectacular/clutch. I'll always remember his OT winner against Detroit a couple of years ago.
Any Sharks fans want to break down this kid's game, strengths and weaknesses, etc?
He's a fast skater, very good acceleration, but (because of his size) not terribly strong on his feet (but not 'soft' either). He's got a decent wrister, and is slightly above average defensively (but not a defensive forward by any stretch). Tons of heart, never takes a shift off, and can play on any line (he spent time on our 1st line when we had injuries).
His max potential is probably 10 goals and 20-25 points a season. He's also got a fantastic attitude, and he looks like jesus when he grows his beard in...
Can't find a great picture of it, it gets even better when its longer.

The above is all true. Honestly, a fantastic two-way guy. If you have injuries you will be glad he's on your team but to be frank, he can't possess the puck to save his life and you don't want him called up for more than 7-10 games... classic example of a guy who when standing on his head can be as good as just about anyone, with a versatile game too. The only issue is, over the long haul he hasn't been able to sustain it. Usually his best games come first though, so, a perfect call-up.
As stated, he's clutch as ****, and even more fun is the fact that he falls down during/after 99% of all goals he scores.

can't watch the video at work but wasn't that on his birthday too, or something?

sounds like Max Talbot. Should fit in nicely with our system.
WBS is looking scary this year...Ferriero looks like the best of the call-up candidates. I'd certainly rather have him sitting in that 14th/15th forward slot than Jason Williams.

Remember seeing a bit of him with San Jose over the last couple of years. Pretty solid player, IMO. Reminded me a bit of Craig Adams (Though Ferriero probably has a little more offense to his game) from the Pens, and I can see the Talbot comparisons too. Good signing for the Pens and looking forward to seeing what he can do.
Back in the mid 80's someone had graffiti'ed: "What if Jesus returns?' on a wall in inner Copenhagen (my native Denmark). Some genius replied below: We'll play Elkjaer (the nations favorite son, star striker on the Danish soccer team) on the wing.
Now I understand we signed Jesus for less than a 10th of Parise's price. That is good business. Question is which of Crosby and Malkin moves to wing.

They have a really young defense and although they are very highly regarded top prospects they will struggle the first half of the season. Unless their goalies have allstar seasons. You never know though if a few guys like Lovejoy, Strait, or Bortuzzo get sent down and pass through waivers it will make them stronger on D.
