The University of Vermont men’s hockey team will sustain a considerable loss today when incoming recruit Zemgus Girgensons signs with the Buffalo Sabres, according to a source

I'd prefer that they err on the side of slow cooking him and Grigs.

There are more examples of guys who've had their development hurt by being rushed as opposed to guys who've had their development hurt by being slow cooked.

The right decision. All parties were obviously in agreement here. Girgensons, his junior coach and the Sabres. It's hard to argue against that.

It's been a while since Jiri Novotny was brought over at 19yo to play in Rochester.

But, I think having Girgensons playing in the AHL at 18yo is rushing him.

Really? I've never heard that. He played 2 years in North Dakota after being drafted and then in the AHL. Being called up during his first season in the AHL is really the only part I would consider being rushed, but even that's a stretch.

Staff had two full seasons at North Dakota after he was drafted, and 34 games in Rochester--in which he scored 44 pts. He was called up after his 21st birthday. Here, they're sending an 18 year-old to Rochester.

I'm not passing on the merits, I just don't think Girgensons' situation is analgous to Drew's.

Here's Sabres University's first star pupil. This will be a test of how good they've got that ship running.

Rolston better be good at developing more than the size and speed aspect of a young player, which is what most of them need the most work on.

Thats a good way to put it.


I've got to think Rolston played a role in the Sabres assessment of him. He seems to have the right backround with NTDP and college teams to work with a kid like ZG.

I agree as well, just because this isn't the usual way things go down doesn't mean this is going to screw up his development.
