Washington Signs Filip Forsberg

Really should've done one of these for Radek Faksa signing but I was too lazy.

Quote:
ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have signed forward Filip Forsberg to a three-year, entry-level contract, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. Forsberg will earn $832,500 at the NHL level and $70,000 at the AHL level.

Forsberg, 17, was drafted by Washington in the first round (11th overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft last month in Pittsburgh. He was listed as the top-ranked European skater heading into the draft according to NHL Central Scouting. Forsberg was the youngest player on Team Sweden at the 2012 World Junior Championships, helping his team capture their first World Junior gold medal since 1981 by recording one assist in six tournament games. The Ostervala, Sweden, native collected 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) in 43 games with Leksand in the second division of Sweden’s senior league in 2011-12.

I don't find that funny at all. He's obviously going to get signed, it's not like the first to get signed is the best player or anything.

Anyway, by the time Forsberg plays his first game there's a couple players who'll have played one or two seasons in the NHL.

Caps beat writer was saying that Forsberg's contract won't likely begin until 2013-14 as he's expected to play in Sweden next year.

I was actually thinking the same thing about Yakupov as the general consensus is that the #1 overall pick is the easiest to sign because you just give him the max. But, when you think about it, he had a busy couple weeks the draft with the Oilers prospect camp being just over a week later, so the Oilers probably told him to go and take some time off and they'd hammer something out after a couple weeks off.

According to his interview, he got a good impression from the Caps right off the bat and decided it was a good idea to get it taken care of.

He's in Virginia for the development camp, and they decided to get it taken care of since everyone is here. His agent started talking terms with the Caps at the draft, so there was already a foundation. Plus, it's all mapped out because of the ELC system, so there's not much haggling to do.

The team complex where the practice rinks are located is co-located with the Caps' offices in VA. Convenience, plus the fact he's about to head to Sweden for the year.

It's the same reason you're seeing prospect signings elsewhere this week. Development camps are winding down.

I'd rather him play in Sweden next year than be rushed to the NHL in an attempt to get a 1st overall draft choice. Oops I mean 4th in a row.

Backstrom, Johansson and now Forsberg. George McPhee is a boss!

Was that an oilers joke? I'm not an oilers fan, I was just saying that he's not playing in the NHL anytime soon so this signing is sort of a non-issue.

Hey, you know what the difference is between Nail Yakupov and Matt Yeats?

One's a legitimate NHL prospect who's probably NHL-ready. The other was a fringe AHL'er who was called up to the NHL in an obvious "attempt to get a 1st overall draft choice."

I'll let you guess which player is which.
