Why the Kings do it: Kings have locked up their C position 1 to 4 with Kopitar/Richards/Stoll/Fraser. And guys like Carter, Lewis and Richardson can all play C as well. Loktionov is not going to have a long-term future /w the Kings.
Why the Canucks do it: Realistically, that 1st is going to be late in the round. Loktionov is a skill player that can turn into a #2C if given the opportunity to play with other skill guys. If not, he can still be effective as a #3C as well. He needs enough ice time to flourish, and Cancuks can provide him the chance.
How about some sort of Zach Smith + package from Ottawa for Edler?
Smith would be nice but never at that price. The + would have to be outstanding. Plus I can't see Ottawa moving him. He fills a need for them, especially with Konopka gone now.

Lokti isn't the type of 3C we need. To me he seems like a Top 6 or bust player.

He fares better in the middle, and we're even more overloaded on the wing as is.
Getting a late 1st for Loki would be excellent, possibly on the verge of realistic. In extreme layman's terms, I think he's a less talented Hodgson,which is okay. But I don't think he's what Vancouver is necessarily looking for on the third line, with the skill they have in spades ahead of the 3C position.
What would it take for us to get Joe Pavelski from the Sharks? They are stacked at C with Thornton, Marleau, and Couture in their top 6
Good luck trying to pry him off our cold dead fingers, we'd likely be asking for your top players. Besides, just because we're "stacked" at C doesn't mean we're going to pawn them off...Pavelski, Couture and Marleau are also wingers if you didn't notice that...So they obviously still have a role in the top-6 (helps with guys getting kicked off the f/o circle too).
I think Montreal is a reasonable partner, though maybe closer to the deadline. We have 3, potentially 4 centres that could fit well as Vancouver's 3rd line centre.

2. Eller - big young natural 2-way centre with perhaps untapped potential
3. Desharnais - centred the top line all year but could be a great secondary scoring threat as 3rd line centre behind Sedin and Kesler
4. Gomez - could play his way back onto roster and re-establish himself as a 2-way centre with playoff experience
Moving anyone other than Gomez now would create a big hole in our lineup unless Galchenyuk shows he can immediately be a top 2 centre. So that's why I say deadline or later on in the season.
Anyway, our biggest roster needs are:
1. Top 6 LW - preferably a goal scorer with size and speed
2. Top 4 D - preferably a RD with size and shutdown ability
3. 4th line C - shutdown FO specialist
4. Bottom pair D
5. Bottom 6 winger to fill checking roles
The players I could see Montreal being interested in (to varying degrees) are:
Bieksa
Burrows
Edler
Hamhuis
Kassian
Connaughton
Tanev
Lapierre
Sauve

The issue here is that with Kesler being out till December, MG likely looks for someone to fill that C gap for opening night. Once Kesler returns he will have Schroeder, Lapierre, Malhotra and whoever his acquires via UFA signing/trade target battling for 2 C spots.
A deadline trade seems unlikely at this point, as the need will need to be filled before then.
Shroeder should be ready. He clearly improved last year. He was picked as the BPA when he was drafted - not to satisfy an organizational need. Not being an ideal style of 3C according to Gillis, this would be the perfect time to play him in an offensive role, boost his value, then move him in a deal for something we need. Kesler will get his 2C role back, may as well use this opportunity to showcase Shroeder's skills and get teams to realize his height isn't going to be an issue.
Leafs are looking for help now, not down the road.
Raymond + 2nd?
I thought the Leafs are still technically in rebuild mode, which is why (some of them) don't think Luongo makes sense for them. I understand you want to make the playoffs, but I don't see the Leafs being cup contenders for 4+ years.
You have to be kidding me. How is the first point irreleveant when we're talking about playing centre? There was opportunity early in the season to use Lappy on the 2nd line Centre and AV didn't because he doesn't trust him to be that guy. He was comfortable with him on the wing only in a top 6 role. My 2nd pt is not false. I never said Ebbet started at 2nd C. I said there were occasions when he played his way in game into that spot.
And finally the 5th point doesn't show I'm a HF rookie. It shows that you have absolutley no understanding of what a role player/grinder is supposed to do. If you think Dale Weise is a player that's more usefull that Ebbet, well there's no helping you.

It's not relevant because Ebbett wasn't ever started in the top 6, at any position, where Lapiere was! Ebbett can play wing too but Lapierre was and is a better option and management clearly agreed. They could have played Ebbett in that position, but they didn't, they played Lapierre. And the next time there is an opening at C in the top 6, like there is to start this season, my point will be proved when Ebbett isn't in the top 6, and either Lapierre or Schroeder will be. Until then you will have to agree to disagree (you are wrong after all.)
On to the next point. In that same opportunity did they use Ebbett at 2C? No, Ebbett was never started in top 6. Sure maybe he played himself into the top 6 but so did the oh so horrible Dale Weise at points.
And finally.. Weise is more valuable to the Canucks then Ebbett because of the role he plays. Ebbett is a player that has never had success in the NHL because he plays a grinders game, with a finesse players frame. Where Weise plays tough, with a tough players frame, making him actually useful. There's a reason why Weise had a full time job with the Canucks while Ebbett didn't, even when he was healthy.
Canucks could use a new 3rd line center to fill Hodgson/Pahlssons spot, and he should be capable of stepping in a top 6 role for a month or two while Kesler is out. Some think Schroeder can step in, but personally I don't think he is the type of player the canucks need right now. I'm sure most of you know the regular trading chips by now, Raymond, Ballard, Tanev, Schroeder, Picks. Maybe a goalie if the 3C is packaged with something. Any 3C's for sale?
Lombardi should be poised for a little bit of a bounceback year now that he's had a full summer to train, and Toronto's got a plethora of #2/3 centres.
Allows the Canucks to get a guy who fits decently as the #3 centre, can also play the wing, and help step in for Kesler's absence to start the year. Lombardi comes with a 1-year contract that easily fits into the Canucks' cap structure. It also allows them to get rid of Luongo, while getting a high potential piece like Nazem Kadri.
Toronto loses their most valuable trading piece, but fill their biggest need with a goalie who despite a bad contract, should get them into the playoffs immidiately.
