What if they deal Voracek and Read in a package for Ryan, but also sign someone like Doan? Would you rather have Voracek and Read than Ryan and Doan?
Personally, I would rather have Ryan over Nash, and I'd certainly rather have Ryan and one of Doan/Semin than Voracek, Read, and Bourdon/Gustafsson. Not everyone agrees. It could be done with enough cap space to make a trade for the top-4 defenseman we are sure to need halfway through the season, too.
I am curious why these rumors are out there. What does your team need with Ryan? Was it just because he specifically said he wanted to be a Flyer, or do you think there is genuine interest on the Flyers side?
He is a good player but the parts going back would not be worth it at all IMO. I wouldn't even do B. Schenn for him straight up. I think he has more potential and is cheaper. Ryan will get a big raise in a few years and honestly, I don't care for his attitude.
Also, your team has a ton of offense, shouldn't you be using those assets to improve the D aspect? Flyers were #2 in GF and #20 in GA. I think your scoring is just fine.
Just wanted to get your input.
It's ridiculous because if this guy was born elsewhere, none of this would be a big deal. He happens to be local and his family is friend's with Clarke's family and suddenly he's a must-have player.
1. I don't like the way Ryan handled the situation in Anaheim. The way he whined in the media about how badly he gets treated etc. was, imo, a showing of poor character. Yes Nash asked for a trade, too, but he always said he'd be ok if it is for the better for Columbus.
2. Nash has more experience. I think it would help this young team to have a guy to look up to. He's won in the olympics (and was part of Canada's best line).
3. The cap-hit can easily be swallowed.
4. Nash is the way better skater, which is a big plus in Lavy's system. Therefore he can be a lot better on the fore- and backcheck than Ryan.
5. I believe Giroux clicks better with left-handed linemates. Hartnell on the left and Nash on the right of Giroux would be a deadly combination for years to come.

How is this true?
We've been in on Parise and Nash, also. Neither of them are from New Jersey or friends with Clarke.
A lot of fans want to see the Flyers add a top end winger to pair with Giroux. Ryan, Nash, and Parise all fit that mold. Ryan is also about the same age as G, so we could potentially pair them together for the rest of their careers. He also has the better cap hit of the two which makes it more team friendly.
That fact that he is from the area, is a Flyers fan, and is a Family friend of Clarke just adds to it. It is exciting to have players that really want to play for your team. Kind of the same infatuation many of us Phillies fans have about Cliff Lee. He took less money to come play for the Phillies and there are a lot of fans that like and respect that about him.
Edit: I would love to see Ryan in a Flyers sweater, but only for the right price. And I do not think that Voracek, Read, ++ is good value from a flyers perspective

What I have a tough time gathering from your post is even after showing that Voracek and Ryan are similar defensively, you state that Voracek, Read, Bourdon + is bordering overpayment.
Reading comprehension for the loss. I said it was somewhere between overpayment and significant overpayment.
Let's realize though... Bourdon does nothing for me over Gervais, Lilja or Gus, therefore he is what I call a throw-in. The + defines how bad of an overpayment this is, but I would agree that Voracek + Read qualifies as overpayment.
The other thing to evaluate in a Ryan trade is the corresponding roster move the team makes to fill that vacated roster spot. If it were Voracek and Read for Ryan and we signed Doan... we're a better team. If we signed, Winnik... probably at least a wash. Just about anyone else, we lose.

I'm not arguing here, but I think there is one more angle that is not being spoken about:
The belief that within the organization, once his current contract runs out, he would be willing to sign a long-term, cap-friendly deal for the Flyers, that possibly takes him to retirement.
Virtually promising that Giroux has goal scorer on his wing for a decade.

Really. Where the hell does his family and Clarke have anything to do with this. He is a young player who would like to play here. Nash wants to play here to, so what? I would like them to land Doan that way we do not have to give up any of our young assets. But that is a very long shot.
@NHLTradesFirst: Bobby Ryan update : Hearing the #Ducks have placed an offer to the #Flyers. The reported deal involves Couturier, Read, 1st + D-man....

Not a chance Homer accepts that deal. That would take away a player who has Ron Francis potential in Sean Couturier and a player who offers excellent production against his cap hit in Matt Read, not to mention a first round pick.
I would love Bobby Ryan to play for the Flyers, but not at the cost of Couturier, Read, and a 1st round draft pick. I would do Read and a first rounder, but I doubt the Ducks would go for that.

You also left out the part where they want a D man too

B.S. Ducks GM Murray already knows the answer is no to any deal that has coots or schenn in it..
