You know, if it is the Sabres, and it may very well be, I wouldn't be totally against it. $7.5M is a lot of money, but you're not just paying for 20 goals and grit, you're paying for a lot of other factors, most notably being the leadership. Ever since Drury and Briere left in 2007 we haven't had any real leadership on this team and someone who would truly hold people accountable in the locker room.
Our radio station WGR 550 today, who I don't always agree with, were spot on in their assessment that we have a lot of younger kids playing here with nobody to truly set an example, and how when you have a young core of guys like Ennis/Myers/Foligno/Girgensons/Hodgson/Grigorenko/Armia etc. you absolutely want a grown man and a respected veteran in the game to lead by example and to teach these kids about the game. I'm sorry but a guy like Pominville doesn't strike me as the type of captain that wouldn't take **** from nobody and hold people accountable for their play on the ice. It's been an embarrassing revolving door of guys coming in and out of the captain and assistant captain roles that we need some stability for a change.
Gambo could have got that info from Doan's agent who is just floating crap out there to increase the offers. I am one of the biggest Shane Doan fans around but I really find it highly likely that offer is on the table.
