I wonder if this is Carolina since they are also a team interested per their own post-game radio host this morning.

Buffalo has a ton of expiring contracts in 2014.
And in that time, there is really only 1 key player staring at a potentially big raise (Ennis).

Does that mean I want to sign Doan? not sure really... but the cap implications are almost meaningless.
The biggest of which are Vanek, Pominville and Ott. Which of those guys don't you think we should plan on resigning?

I could see Darcy being willing to overpay, particularly if Pegula's pushing him to make a deal. But 3/18 would be overpaying. This 4/30 deal is insanity of the highest order and stinks to me like Garth Snow. If bad teams are offering that kind of cash and good teams are saying, "Come play for a Stanley Cup!," then mediocre teams like the Sabres have 0 shot at Doan.

My guesses:

1) Islanders
2) Jets
3) Canes

With all that said, I'd love Doan...hah.

I'm going to guess that one out of Vanek and Pommer doesn't resign here in two years (whether because of their choice or the Sabres)...with Vanek being the most likely candidate.

Or Philly, who allegedly offered Parise $100m+. Or Pittsburgh who coveted Parise, has Crosby signed long-term, and can easily fit Malkin's extension into their budget in 2014-15. Or Carolina, who is desperately trying to make a splash this summer. Or Winnipeg, whose owner is even richer than T-Pegs and desperately wants to upgrade his team. Or the Rangers, who have a ton of money to spend and could hold on to all their important assets rather than trade for Nash.

We could go on and on. There are a lot of suitors.

If the Sabres are looking to spend big money they should do it on another top 4 defense man.
What would the Sabres do with another top 4 defenseman? Defensive depth is our biggest strength. A guy like Doan would fit everything this team needs. Would I be happy about paying him 7.5 Million over 4 years? Not really, but as Jame said I wouldn't worry too much about the cap implications at least not for a few years

I disagree the cap hit is meaningless. What if we're going after someone at the deadline and the deal falters because of cap reasons? 7.5M is far too much for a 35 year old over the next 4 seasons. We don't know how the next CBA will affect the cap, and this could turn into another immovable contract. Does the Doan signing make this team an instant contender? No. This team is still 2-3 years away from being a cup contender, make a move like that when we're closer to the top, not when were still fighting to make the playoffs.

Ryan Miller would be the guy I wouldn't re-sign in 2014 as he'll be on the downside of his career and That'd be over 6 million off the books.

If the Sabres are the team, you have to think Darcy has a trade lined up to follow

Those numbers make no sense for Buffalo. Given Regier's general cap saviness I think there is no chance he's the GM involved.

3 pages and no mention that Doan is a natural center? We're slipping.

You might want to alter that or change that. You're going to take a lot of flak for posting it.

Does this really deserve its own thread? Considering the long odds of the Sabres landing Doan and only one source - Regier's admission yesterday of interest - is out there linking Buffalo to Doan, the rumored offer could have been debated under the various "summer moves" threads...

I can't imagine the Sabres offering that deal, but yeah, if they did, I would think it would spell the end of Stafford. They could also try to unload Leino to a basement team (not likely).

That "Summer Moves" thread has dried up in recent days, so at least this prompted some discussion...even if it is about something pretty ridiculous.

cap wise... it makes sense to me.... if you look at what they have available this year and next, and what's coming off the books over the next 2 years.

the sabres are in very good shape cap wise, as they are structured to turn over from the old core to the new very nicely over the next few years.

Vanek could very well get a smaller contract next time - depending on what happens with salaries overall. Miller too, for that matter.

4 year contract w/ the 35+ conditions attached? Good god. That is dangerous and awful.

Definitely sounds like Shane Doan offer isn't from #Sabres. #Buffalo

I'm basing my Doan take on what Darcy said and other EC teams. You never know, though
