At the same time I think Howson is loosing leverage and his asking price is un-reasonable.
While I do think they made a great trade by ridding themselves of Carter and getting a guy like JMFJ who will help lead their team, that GM is flippin' clueless.

We get Nash plus Sanford. Mason's cap hit plus Nash is like 11 mil and even if we include five guys we'll still be over the cap. With Sanford we're well under 9 mil. Given our cap room is about 8.5 and we give back a couple mil in salary, it's perfect. Columbus can re-sign King.
King, Bernier+ for Nash seems reasonable. Gagne might have to be included since there really would be no room, plus it would be cap going the other way
King,IMO, is a good trade candidate. He has good playoff and u are trading high on him

They want forwards, and at least an established goal scorer. It would be Bernier, Williams, Toffoli, and a 2nd or something. Doesn't sound like they are that high on Bernier anyway, they would likely cut him out and add Clifford or something, and then we would be just trading for Nash, which is a suicidal cap hit for us to take on... Bernier will likely be traded in a small deal for a pick or a prospect, and that deal is likely to come later in the year, near the deadline.

Also, you guys have to realize that this year Quick won't be getting as many games as the past, this is going to be the shortest off-season EVER for him. I see him playing maybe 55-60 games, tbh. Let Bernier's value go high, let him start some games and we'll go from there.
Sounds like Howson and Lombardi discussed Bernier+ for Nash at the draft, but couldn't come to an agreement. Columbus ultimately decided to go for the cheaper option in Bobrovsky.
As much as I think Nash would be perfect in LA, we're not in a position to give up what Columbus is asking for.

I think we should dangle 25-30 starts for bernier this year to keep him a little bit content. Give quick some rest for his short summer, and showcase bernier a little for a more realistic value. Right now i don't think the rest of the league "buys" how good he is, just looking at GP and stats

C. Bernier does not have the value to be the center piece of a trade for Nash, especially when they just acquired Bob.
D. What value does Gagne have to Cbus...he just got his cup and could retire if traded there, otherwise he only has one year on his deal and could walk right after...
E. "scrap" prospects like Vey and Hickey and Muzzin have way less value then people on here think.
I wouldn't pay any winger $7.8M. That is the type of money that Kopitar would (and may) get when his deal expires. Nash is overpaid. For a team like Columbus it is fine because they had to overpay in order to retain Rick Nash, but on a deep squad like the Kings, it makes no sense.
No we don't need Nash and his salary is very hefty. But looking at salaries by UFA this season has given me pause. Yes Parise's contract is 7.5m avg but that's because of last 3 years. In the middle, he's getting paid 9m per year and that might be the new per year going rate for star UFA. If the new CBA manages to lessen contract length, then the AAV of contract would better reflex annual salary. Nash deal would become ok value....especially if news of Doan getting 7.5m are true. Down the road, I don't think it's a bad deal
Anyways back to Bernier. Yes he has 1 year remaining and will be RFA. But he has asked for a trade, twice now. He is willing to go public with his request. He could be a distraction on the team and I don't want that. So best to resolve it this summer

Number three, it is more than understandable that Jonathan Bernier wants to leave the Kings and he will surely not be happy to even start training camp with the Kings. After all, when he was chosen by the Kings in the first round, it was with the goal of becoming the number one netminder. We all know the rest, Quick has been awesome (although I think that a 10 year contract is just insane) and has now been crowned number one goaltender for years to come. Bernier will soon be 24. He is competitive, wants to prove what he can do and does not want to be back-up anymore.
Finally, don't expect to get very much for Bernier. Look at what the Habs got for Halak after he was awesome in the Stanley Cup playoffs 2 years ago... The "best case scenario" from a management perspective would be to keep Bernier at least for the beginning of 2012-2013, have him in goal at least 1 out of 3 games in order to give him exposure and higher the stakes. And depending with what kind of progress (or regression) the King's season will be having, then would be the time to make a move. But, bottom line, Bernier won't buy in to such a scenario.
The best deal we could get is a backup goalie + 2nd or 3rd round draft pick. It's time to move on.

I am totally disagreeing with your assessment of Bernier situation. Bernier will not be traded for backup goalie + 2nd or 3rd round draft pick. His value is higher and Lombardi will keep him until he did not get good value in return.
If is going to be trade with Ottawa Senators, Kings will get 1st round pick or elite level prospect (Mika Zibanejad/Matt Puempel).

And he won't be traded until dean gets the value he wants. I expect dean will hold out until he can get a 1st round pick, if he doesn't get it, Bernier will backup quick.
Bernier is still an RFA, Dean doesn't have to move him.
