Any word on why Gedig and Pietila aren't going? Do they have to pay their ways to Newark for camp?

I dont, but I'm a bit biased since I'm a Devils fan and want the team to win.

Yes, NCAA players with eligibility remaining have to cover their expenses when attending a pro camp. Also, if a player is in summer school it can be difficult to leave to attend camp.

As I understand the rules, there's one 48 hour period per team where an NCAA player can attend with some expenses covered. That can be a tryout (doesn't have to be on ice) with the team around draft time or one of the camps, but other than that they have to cover own expenses. Very strict rules about the 48 hour version and only one time per team where that option is available.

So depending on the players, health, summer school, finances, many reasons why an NCAA player may not attend.

Don't know anything specific about these 2 players and this summer other than that they do have NCAA eligibility remaining.

I was interested to see Gavrus, too bad he's not there. Any word on why these guys aren't coming?

I'm hoping a few of them start to stand out from the group soon. With such depth on defence in the system, it's easy for them to get lost in the shuffle and miss their opportunities. Hopefully the extreme amount of competition will spur them to play better.

If Merrill comes to the camp in good mind set and plays well that he should take the next step I could see Lou making a serious push to get this kid under contract.

Lou would never ask a kid to choose going pro over a education if you think otherwise then you haven't heard him talk on the subject. Lou would welcome Jon if he chose to go pro but if Lou had the final say all of our college prospects would complete all 4 years.

I know we all harp on this. But what if Merrill shows that he is NHL ready . Then what do we do ??? What if Merrill development is soo far ahead that he can play in the NHL, would we still not want him in the NHL ?

I'd just let him play in the AHL, and maybe see if we can bring him up in the next year after Zidlicky's contract is up. There's really no spots open right now, and there is even a spot to get rid of right now. Tallinder 2 more years, Volchenkov 4 more years, Fayne not sure yet, Larsson wll be here at least until he can hit UFA which as of now if the rules don't change under the next CBA will be in 2018 I believe. Greene has 3 more years, and Sal 3 more. Harrold is just a depth guy. Hate to say it, but it's unlikely all of Merrill, Urbom, Burlon, and Gelinas will all play here with the big club one day.

If his development is advanced, and he still wants to stay in college... I say let him finish out his college career. At that point, it can't hurt. He'll be logging top minutes and given adequate playing time there.

With the way the defense looks right now, unless some crazy trades are done, he'd probably be getting limited minutes and limited games (as a rookie should).

Another two years furthering his advancement couldn't hurt, I don't think.

It would make for an even more interesting main camp that's for sure. I think his skill level is probably pretty close to NHL quality, and it should show at this camp, and camp in the fall should he turn pro. It would make for even more of a log jam in the organization, but if you ask me, it's a pretty good problem to have. Larsson, Urbom, Gelinas & Merrill could all be on the team two years from now.

Had Merrill not missed half of his sophomore season, I don't think there's any question he'd be turning pro. I think this prospect camp will prove that his skill level is far byeond any other prospect in the organization period. Question is, is there going to be an NHL spot for him this year?

I think turning pro would speed up his development even more, even if he spent the entire year in the AHL, which is entirely possible. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

I'd be very surprised if Merrill turns pro, only because I think he wants to leave Michigan on a good note, after a strong, full season.

Again if Merrill is ready, I definitely want him to turn pro

I definitely see Merrill atleast getting the 9 games in the NHL if he turns pro.

Merrill could have turned pro after his freshman year so I think he'll be fine if he does this year.

We need to lose a D-man anyway, but if Merrill shows he's ready, we should sell off two (Greene-Tallinder?). Move them for help up front or even for picks. Either of those guys could get a high 2nd rounder.

If Merrill is ready he's ready. Going back to Michigan will seem pretty quaint to him if it looks like he can stick with the NHL.

But that all remains to be seen. Hoping for a great camp from all of our D prospects.

That ten game rule only applies to junior players that get sent back to their junior teams.

If Merrill plays a pro game of any sort, the first year of any contract he signs will kick in.
