Do not trade Greene. He quietly makes the defense go.

Lou would probably want him but not at the cost of his education if it's Merrill's choice. Lou would never advise a kid to leave school.

How is Merrill ahead of anyone who's played in the AHL in this discussion?

We'll see how the camp unfolds in like 5 minutes. I also think there's about a 0% chance Merrill makes the NHL this year.

Agreed, I think this is his main consideration here. I don't expect him to finish the four years, but he probably won't go pro this summer.

No, I believe it applies to AHL players too. Bergfors's ELC kept sliding even though he played a couple NHL games in each season. But he never got above 9 games, so the contract didn't kick in.

Yeah, unless Merrill absolutely shreds camp and preseason games (and that's if he even turns pro), there are too many bodies ahead of him for him to jump right into the NHL.

I will say this though - once he does turn pro (I think he's staying in school for one more year), it won't take him long to make the NHL.

I think he turns pro but that is unrelated to ELC.

Pro meaning he can't go back to school if he flops. He's stuck in the AHL instead of being able to complete school.

I'm not sure Jon's maturity issues are yet worked out another year of school should do wonders for him.

If that were the case, then Henrique would only be on year-two of his ELC, because he only played one game in 10-11.

If you're playing in the pros, your contract is active. It's a two-way contract.

I know that going pro wipes out his NCAA eligibility. The poster that DD was replying to, said that Merrill would get 9 games if he turned pro. DD said no, because that would activate his ELC. I'm saying no, it won't activate his ELC, but he wouldn't get the 9 games anyway, even if he does turn pro (which I don't think he will).

The ELC slide rule doesn't apply to Merrill because he's over 20 already.

I was confused for a bit why Bergfors's contract slid twice then, but then I saw this and remembered:

And that's why it didn't apply to Henrique for the second year either. His contract slid once, then it was going to kick in anyway no matter what in 2010-11 because he turned 20. Bergfors only slid twice because he was signed at 18 and was allowed to go straight to the AHL as a Swedish player. Which means DD is correct, Merrill's contract would kick in if he turns pro, no matter how many games he plays.

Tom Gulitti @TGfireandice

Albany coach Rick Kowalsky along with Scott Stevens & Sergei Brylin and goalie coaches Chris Terreri & Jacques Caron will be running things.

Tom Gulitti @TGfireandice

Devils GM Lou Lamoriello said NHL coaching staff will be completed by the end of the week, but no decisions have been made on that yet.

Tom Gulitti @TGfireandice

When asked if Brylin is a candidate for an assistant job, Lamoriello said "We'll see."

I doubt the coaches are decided by the end of the week. We are tragically bad at kicking the can down the road. Although this has minor/no implications.

Lamoriello said G Jeff Frazee is getting married, so they decided to let him skip the camp.

Merrill doesn't need to turn pro just yet. He can finish the NCAA season and then move into the AHL towards the end. If he impresses, and the Devils head to the playoffs, he may have a much longer season than was anticipated if the Devils hold the entire AHL team again.

That's a pretty good reason to skip it.

Stefan Matteau was taping his stick when I was walking in. He'll be in the second grp this morn. Wonder if he'll attempt a wraparound? #1994

It's possible NJ's top def. prospect, Jon Merrill, will make his decision on whether he'll return to the U of Mich for jr yr after this wk.

if you’re ever going to post something that doesn’t sound like an elitist senator talking down to a lowly towel boy, can you let me know? I imagine it will be a lot like haley’s comet- I’d like to tell my kids someday I saw it. I’d like to grab a screenshot too, if possible, and put the rare image on a rarer trillion dollar bill.

I took a ride behind Comet Hale-Bopp. True story.

I'm hoping the Devils post legit video or short interviews with some of the prospects later today.
