He obviously meant it was a shock because he hadn't envisioned himself being back in the AHL after producing on a first line in the NHL.

Now, the second thought of yours may be true, perhaps Ruff didn't communicate to Adam that he was on the path to Rochester if his play didn't improve (maybe Ruff didn't even think he was until very shortly before the demotion), but it's very much a stretch to assume that. More importantly, Ruff surely told him what he's doing wrong and needs to improve on as that is the most basic thing a coach does, and he no doubt did that as Adam slid down the line-up.
The OP reports that he heard about it from Regier and not Ruff, so that wasn't my assumption. I'm not sure what the sources are there, but I'm entertaining it in my argument.

If Adam said he was shocked to be sent down, I don't find it "very much a stretch" to say that he wasn't warned he might be sent down.

Like Rob said, getting demoted to the 4th line with limited minutes is usually a sign that all is not well with your play -- regardless if Ruff had an explicit talk with Adam (we can only assume he did, but we'll never know for sure).

This entire discussion should have ended with this post.

Hockeybuzz bloggers aren't considered credible on HFB. I'm not sure why commenters on Hockeybuzz should be either.

At this point there's not credible source that says Ruff didn't talk to Adam, so the discussion is moot.

I love how people like the OP always cite players like Luke Adam who have stumbled after they came up, yet neglect to mention players like Foligno who have excelled under Ruff. You know...kind of like the rate at which rookies succeed or fail in the NHL.

Adam was a point per game player after 10-11 games, Foligno was only here for 14. So who knows..

I don't think the thesis was ever that Ruff just generally ****s up young players, but that Ruff doesn't communicate well with his players.

No reason to think Ruff communicated any better with Foligno than he did with Adam.

Also, stolen from the Leino thread (but really belongs just as much here):

http://www.iltasanomat.fi/nhl/art-1288484223980.html

Leino: I couldn't adjust to playing C and defensive game. Player like me needs pp time. I can't succeed if I'm playing 11 mins a game....Sometimes I wondered what the **** is going on and what the **** I'm doing here. No one told me why I wouldn't get more responsibility and opportunities....Hard to predict point numbers but I think something like 50 would be a good start. I know I can get that much if they give me a chance to do that. I hope they do.
