Now, the second thought of yours may be true, perhaps Ruff didn't communicate to Adam that he was on the path to Rochester if his play didn't improve (maybe Ruff didn't even think he was until very shortly before the demotion), but it's very much a stretch to assume that. More importantly, Ruff surely told him what he's doing wrong and needs to improve on as that is the most basic thing a coach does, and he no doubt did that as Adam slid down the line-up.

The OP reports that he heard about it from Regier and not Ruff, so that wasn't my assumption. I'm not sure what the sources are there, but I'm entertaining it in my argument.
If Adam said he was shocked to be sent down, I don't find it "very much a stretch" to say that he wasn't warned he might be sent down.
