Essentially, our entire draft would have been Mark Appel. Which would be idiotic.
A) Had they signed Appel to $3.8, would they have forfeited next year's 1st round pick?

B) Why couldn't/didn't they allocate more money towards the draft. From what I read here, they signed a 2nd round pick to a $5 mill signing bonus last year.

BigLargeHuge's post really confused me so I am really curious now.

Yeah, you would be an idiot to sign Appel for a dime over the allotment and lose a first next year. Next year is supposed to be a much deeper more talent laden draft, especially at the top, so you would expect to get a comparable talent with the 9th pick. And lots more flexibility as you get draft pick cap space for both of your firsts.

Ironic that it is one of the teams that has lost for more years than any team in any major sport in history that got screwed over this. But I am guessing that was what Boras was going for in screwing his client over. And make no mistake, Appel will almost certainly end up screwed over this.

A) No, because they wouldn't have exceeded their draft pool to warrant the penalty. They offered, as NH said, "every last dollar" they could before incurring a draft pick penalty.

B) Because it's a new system.

No. Had they signed him for a penny more then yes, the first would be lost.

And last year has zero to do with this year. Last year there were no penalties.

Really wasn't interested in the draft this year. I guess from reading the posts here that they moved that signing deadline up (about damn time) and changed the slotting system. I know we missed out on Appel. Did we use that saved money to sign any good later round guys or was it just pocketed by the Nuttings?

You can not use that first money ($3.8 million) on anyone else. So pocketed. The rest was a mixed bag. They did go overslot on a couple of players, but under on several more. And I linked an article about one who was pissed and called the Pirates cheap because they would not budge from $8,000 under slot and go to slot ($130,000 instead of $138,000). He is likely going to college instead and went to the press pretty pissed off over the $8000 snub.

Yes, we signed four other guys that we wouldn't have signed otherwise. According to GMNH. If they are good or not, only time will time, haha.

Sounds like a system that can, and will, screw the pirates over. Gives the prospects leverage to just push for more money if they don't wanna sign with the Buccos. And let's be realistic, when kids dream about the major leagues, no ones has that dream in a Buccos uniform.

I think Hurst, Kuchno, Moroff and Ross were guys we wouldn't have been able to sign had we signed Appel. Though I think Ross is apparently going to try to weasel out of his deal.

Hm, I'm no fan of the system, but leverage is a dicey subject. I mean, there's no guarantee Appel finds himself in a better spot 12 months from now. If the 2013 draft turns out to be a strong one, and some are saying that it will, he may very well end up drafted right around the 8th spot once again, potentially lower. Not to mention if he gets an injury. And then what? There's no college to go back to then. It's either sign or play Independent ball, which not only is not a very good idea, but refusing to sign twice in consecutive years is probably going to be one hell of a reputation to shake.

He could have avoided everything had he just taken the $6 million from Houston in the first place and gone first overall.

Like I said, the one and only thing the Rockies do remotely well is hit.
