They called him "Arnie Pie in the Sky" because he once puked out of a helicopter. True story.

hahaha

I remember the first game Steigy called him that and I hoped he wouldn't stick with it. But of course he did. A-hole.

Yeah, the first I remember seeing the awfulness that is "Big Dog" was when one of the posters here started using it. I think it was Steelcitysexualassault or someone in the prospects thread.

I really don't think it started here. almost positive it was in WBS. first I saw it on here was people complaining that they didn't like it and me loving it for being so stupid and awesome. it has a freaking catchphrase people.

Big Dog sounds dumb but it may be an effective nickname if it reminds Tangradi of the style he has to play on a nightly basis in order to make it in the NHL.

Kind of reminds me of when they called Scott Hatteburg "pickin' machine" in Moneyball (and in real life, apparently). He wasn't a picking machine, but it was just kind of a way of getting him to have more confidence in his defensive abilities, and it worked.

So Big Dog, Big Horse, the T-Train, something like that. Goofy but more effective than just Tanger or ET or whatever.

Despres is The Big Horse. I know I heard it somewhere but it may have just been my RL friends. we have pretty ridiculous nicknames for very little reason.

I like Big Dog because it's do dopey and uninspired that it's kind of endearing. Better than just adding -er or -sy to the existing name like 96% of current hockey nicknames.

Supposedly he models his game after datsyuk. And he seems like a humble kid.

I heard that somewhere too. I think (if I'm remembering correctly) his nickname at St. John was "Horse" (like work horse) because he logged a lot of minutes every game. I kind of like it so I hope it sticks.

^ Yep.

From another article.

Quote:
He was nicknamed ‘Horse’ by his teammates early in his career for his ability to log big minutes on the blueline.

Ironically Despres talked about his nickname a bit recently.

The good insight is in the article linked from the first pos; the rest of the thread is about discussing that and the power of nicknames. So take off, eh! Also feel free to read the actual article this thread was made for and add your thoughts before harshing on everyone else.

Re: Despres

There is no one named Horse on this team. CV4

There is however an Elmer. Sometimes horses are named Elmer, but it's never a good sign. However I like iron-y, so this further enforces the name's rightful place in Penguins lore. It will motivate Elmer not to become complacent or lazy in his workhorse-like role.

He's like the little brother who gets picked on even though he has skills. Or especially because he has skills. When someone calls him Booger, they mean it in the best possible way. It's either that or Beluga. What's better and more fitting for a hockey player... naming him after a whale, after caviar, or after nose-ornaments?

Come on. It's pretty clear his nickname should be 'Blücher." Then we can post pictures from Young Frankenstein anytime he scores.

Blucher may be acceptable as well though I'm not familiar with this cult classic.
