As he should. Hamels will easily get 7 years for at least $170 million on the open market. If 5 for 120 is in fact the Phillies offer, I hope he tells them to shove it. Watching the bidding war on the trade market for Hamels and then seeing what the Phillies are able to get in return for him will be the most exciting thing that happens all season.

7 year at $170M is about 24.286M per year. 5 years at $120M is 24M per year. Unless you're getting at that 5 years isn't long enough?

It's pretty well settled that Cole wants 7 years, and that is the sticking point between he and the Phils currently.

That's exactly what I'm getting at. Also, regardless of the annual average value, $170M is $50M more than $120M and comes with two added years of guaranteed security.

Kind of a moot point...they owners dug their grave with these salaries. No need to handicap the team by taking a stand against SOP.

If Halladay owns, it will be awesome. I do still love seeing Papelbon pumped up after a win.

Agreed on both counts. I think the thing that's keeping my hope alive is how evident it is that they think they're still alive. This season could hurt the legacy or cement it.

Get over it, boys. It isn't happening...

Quote:
For the Phillies to have the best chance to make the playoffs, 89 wins would give them better than a 50/50 shot (68.75%) to make it, with 90 wins increasing the chances to seeming 13 of 16 (81.25%). 86 to 88 wins will get them in the conversation.

...

89 wins: 50-22 (69.44%)

90 wins: 51-21 (70.83%)

It can totally still happen. With this rotation healthy, there's no reason this team can't easily win 3/5 out of every 5. Then you add in one or even two more per, and it starts adding up. I'm not saying it's likely, but it's possible. I have faith.

On top of winning 3/5 of every game down the stretch (against arguably the toughest schedule in the league for the second half), they also have to pass like 7 teams in the standings (meaning while the Phillies are on a tear, the seven teams ahead of them have to falter) all for only a chance at the second wild card. Even if they win 90 games (which is HIGHLY unlikely), they still are guaranteed nothing. It's over. Pack it up and get some value for your players that aren't coming back (Hamels, Victorino, Pierre, etc).

Winning 3/5 (60%) gets you to 83 Wins. Sad to say but they gotta pack it up. Too many teams to hop over while playing at a ridiculous pace.

Also, if we start winning, it is possible for others to falter.

Negativity check:

"After trailing the Red Sox by nine games on Sept. 4, the Rays overcame the largest September deficit in major league history to make the playoffs, unleashing a wild celebration in the process."

"Cardinals were 10 games out with 31 to play, 8 back with 21 to play, and three games out with five to play."

Yep, completely impossible for the Phillies to make up a 10 game deficit to get the last wild card spot with 71 games left. You're right, I'll stop watching, I'm sorry.

There's a pretty glaring difference. On this date last season the Rays were seven games over .500 and the Cardinals were five games over .500 (the Philles are 11 games under). Tampa bay ended with 91 wins, Cardinals with 90. If the Phillies want to reach those numbers (which would likely get them in, but not a guarantee), they'd have to go 50-21. While that is possible, I think it works out to be somewhere around the pace of a 105 win season. Pack it in!

All I'm saying is that teams have overcome this deficit to get in before. It's certainly not over. Likely? No. Impossible? Not even close.

Which team was 11 games under .500 and behind 6 teams in the standings?

None, it's a moot point. I'm saying it's possible to overcome the deficit in the wildcard race. If it can be done in a month, which it has before, there's no reason the Phillies can't make it up in a month then run parallel to the teams while winning one more game.
