Take your pick (Be The GM)

Here's your shot at being GM.

I wanna know from the Smashville fans and followers who you would sign from the remaining list of free agents. I have gone through the free agents lists of players still available and picked out some of the best in my eyes. Now obviously I didn't type all of them so if you have someone else in mind, throw it out there.

Pick the player and write term/$per/total

If you have another scenario, write that down too. Here's some guys from the UFA's list.

F Kristian Huselius (CBJ)
F Radek Dvorak (DAL)
F Daniel Winnik (SJ)
F Gilbert Brule (PHO)
F Shane Doan (PHO)
F Alexander Semin (WSH)
F Eric Fehr (WPG)
F Jochen Hecht (BUF)

D Michal Roszival (PHO)
D Cam Barker (EDM)
D Carlo Colaiacovo (STL)
D Jaroslav Spacek (CAR)
D Pavel Kubina (PHI)
D Milan Jurcina (NYI)

Let the Managing begin...

If I were David Poile, I would do the following:

re-sign Shea Weber for 10 years at 8 million per year (no creative signing bonus, just a flat contract)

ship Blum + draft pick to Calgary for J.Bouwmeester (wishful thinking)
OR send prospect + draft pick to Pittsburgh for Paul Martin

sign Alexander Semin for 4 years at 6.5 million per year

sign Pavel Kubina or Carlo Colaiacovo for defensive depth in case one of our defensive youngsters falter or regress...

give Shane Doan a blank check and see if he will end his career in Nashville...

I'd be interested only in Semin and Doan, in that order, among the forwards. I think I would prefer Semin because his potential reward is higher than Doan, even though he comes with alot of risk. Doan's a solid player, but more of the same for us. Semin is a dynamic forward which weve never really had (except for Rads and maybe Kariya, maybe Sullivan at his best).

As for D, I like Kubina and Colaiacovo. Either one would be fine on the 2nd pairing and provide a veteran experience, and insurance for a Josi injury or if Blum crashes and burns, IMHO.

I'd go:

Semin - 3 yrs at 6 mil each.
Kubina - 1 year at 2.5 mil.

I would give Weber 10yrs, 10mil to ensure he stays here.

Semin 1yr $6mill (prove it)

Kubina 1yr $3.5mill (made 3.5 with Philly last year)
Jurcina/Colaiacovo @ 2yrs around $2-2.5million per (not a believer in Blum)
Doan 4yrs/$5.75/$23mill

But before signing Semin or Doan I think we should offer Anaheim;
Blum, Smith, and a pick for Bobby Ryan

Sign Weber 12yrs/$9M per

Sign Semin to 4yrs $26-27M total

Sign Doan to 3yrs $15.5M

Sign Colaiacovo 2yrs $5M

Maybe make a trade of Blum/Ellis/Legwand/Spaling (prob a combination) + prospect for B Ryan.

its impossible to say how much it would take.... I suspect to convince Semin to come here rather than detroit, New York or Pittsburgh would require a $7mil x 6 yrs type deal

Weber is going to get 13-14 yrs at 8.5 to 9 million average, from somebody....

Wilson+Ellis(or Blum)+Spaling(or Halischuk) might be enough to get Ryan traded to a conference rival...

If it would take $7m/6yrs to get Semin I'd rather not have him at all. We'd be better off signing Doan, and then letting the young guys come up. And I've been pretty vocal about not wanting Doan.

that was my point... i suspect if we offer a reasonable approximation of whathe's actually worth, he will go elsewhere..

To me, if Weber doesn't sign I need 2 top defensemen who can eat 25 minutes a game and a 15 goal (min) forward.

1. Re-sign Weber to a lifetime contract
2. Sign Semin to a 4-5 year deal
3. Sign Doan to a 3-4 year deal
4. Trade Blum and a pick to Calgary for JBo
5. Trade Wilson, and two of better prospects or one prospect/2nd round pick for Bobby Ryan
6. Sign Colavacchio to a 2 year deal as insurance

That's a lot of moves and people changing places. What it does though is gives us a solid top 4 in Weber, JBo, Klein and Josi. We could use combos of Weber/Jbo & Klein/Josi or swap Josi and JBo. It also allows Ellis to come along slowly with Gill and we have insurance in Colavacchio.

We give up a potential top 6 in Wilson but gain one in Ryan while gaining another one in Semin for nothing. Round that out with another top 6 power forward type in Doan who has leadership skills and all of a sudden, the rest of the guys who were probably a line to high to begin with now get bumped to the second and third lines. Even if we don't land Doan or Semin, we've upgraded significantly. I would say adding two of the three forwards is imperative though.

Heck, if we can't swing a deal for Ryan, keep Wilson and you add Doan and Semin and we gain a lot of depth up front. I could handle that.

I'd go for Huselius.

Nobody wants Huselius because of his injuries the past two years, but if he bounces back to what he once was, you can get 45-60 points for pocket change.
