Breaking: Shea Weber agrees to offer sheet with Philadelphia. 14 years, upwards of $100 mil. Preds have 7 days to match. Wow!!

That team's offseasons are more exciting than their seasons.

Like I said in the main board thread, Philly just guaranteed that Weber's going to be with Nashville for a very long time. They have the cap space and financial means to match, and won't hesitate to.

Earlier this week someone posted that the offseason doesn't start until the Flyers do something completely WTF worthy..I think it was BWC. Now it's started.

Central News: Weber Signs OS with PHI (14 Years, $100+ Million)

Dear God.

And BWC called the fact the Flyers were quiet in another thread and we were waiting for a Holmgren "WTF" moment to come. I think he speculated they offered Doan a lot of money.

But that's not the point.

Weber and Suter out of the division? Yes, please.

I don't think weber will end up out of the division. I think Nashville has to match.

It's tricky.

I personally believe Weber is the NHL's most elite defenseman.

If Weber's deal is matched, Nashville can't trade him for 365 days. They were looking to deal him before he signed the OS. He signed the OS out of frustration for a deal not getting done. If you're Nashville, you can get more than four first-round picks for Weber in a trade for the quality in return. However, if you keep Weber for one more year, is it worth paying him $20+ million on a deal loaded like no other in the first year?

Poile is probably throwing **** off his desk.

When the salaries for all 30 teams are held to the standard of the top 5 or 6 team payrolls, you are going to need regulation.

wow!!!

(btw..dreger is tsn and tends to be pretty legit in what he comes up with)...a bit of a tool, but he's connected and generally knows what he's talking about.

Darren Dreger ‏@DarrenDreger
Nashville was working on a trade and its believed several deadlines passed before Flyers grew tired of waiting. Weber signed offer sheet.

Darren Dreger ‏@DarrenDreger
I'm told a number of teams were in on a possible Shea Weber trade. If Preds don't match, they receive 4- 1st round picks as compensation.

Darren Dreger ‏@DarrenDreger
I may have made an error on compensatory picks. Depending on aav, it could be 2 firsts, 2nd and a 3rd round pick if Preds don't match.

If anyone saw what Holmgren offered Parise, you can only imagine the astronomical numbers thrown to Weber's agent in this deal.

I could honestly see an absurd contract of $135 million over 14 years.

Yeah, I'd it's that front loaded, it's too risky to match for Nashville IMO. Just take the picks and turn to other guys like Ryan, Yandle, etc.

There are only 2 right scenarios for Nashville
1.Match the offersheet, bite the bullet on bonus money for one year and trade him to the highest bidder after one year if Weber wants out. Nashville won't have to honor any NMC/NTCs.
2.Match the offersheet and they have their franchise defense-man for life.

Weber is an asset which won't lose any value during next 5 years(barring catastrophic injuries) and losing him for 4 low firsts makes little sense.

I tentatively agree. You can't let Weber go for 4 low firsts. But we have to see the total contract value first. All I've seen is 100+. What if that ends up being 130 mil or something?

why should the Yotes or Ducks agree to this?

I hope the Preds don't match that offer

sorry for being totally obtuse...but if Nashville matches this does this mean Weber is in N for the next 14 years? This seems obvious...but it just seems weird to me that he'd leave himself open to the idea of being in Nashville for the next 14 years...and honestly i find it odd he'd want to be in Philly for 14 years, too. Did Giroux give him assurances? Does he really like cheesesteak?

One with hockey knowledge or one with balls? Isn't this eerily similar to the amount of money we were "supposedly" offering Parise? Bowman zzzzzzzzz.

Nashville could trade him 1 year after they matched the OS.

Losing Weber for a handful of late 1st rounders is bad for the Preds, but paying him the money is another story.

i didn't think of that. but then aren't they trying to unload a 14 year deal? there's something about this i'm obviously missing...b/c this all seems too bizarre to be believed.

Pretty terrible summer for Nashville fans.

But I can't see the Preds letting him go. Especially not after what happened with Suter.

Looks like Weber doesn't want to stay in NSH

losers of the offseason: Detroit. Lost Lidstrom & Stuart, couldn't replace them and have a lot of Cap Space left. Sinking ship

well, at least re: nashville. i have no problem with preds fans themselves.

this might be an accidentally great summer for us. we do nothing at all to address any of our problems (and in fact add an asst q crony coach who is even worse at special teams management then our remaining asst q crony coach)...but end up winning the division by default

...admittedly the will stop after yet another 1st round exit.
