Quote:
The Philadelphia Flyers have signed defenceman Shea Weber to a 14-year offer sheet worth upwards of $100 million.

The Nashville Predators' have seven days to match the offer if they wish to retain Weber's services.

The restricted free agent was awarded a one-year, $7.5 million deal through arbitration prior to the 2011-12 season after failing to come to a long-term agreement with the Predators.

Quote:
Philadelphia Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren has released the following statement at 8 a.m. Thursday morning:

"The Philadelphia Flyers have signed restricted free agent (D) Shea Weber to an offer sheet. There will be no further comment at this time."
------------------------

Added Philly.com:

http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/f...fer-sheet.html

Quote:
A source told the Daily News that Weber spent time in Philadelphia last week meeting with the Flyers' brass, though that also has not been confirmed by the team. This would not be tampering, since Weber was not under contract with any team.

Weber, 26, would be signed until he is 40 years old. At exactly $110 million, his salary cap hit would be $7.8 million per year, just slightly more than his $7.5 million hit from last season in Nashville and the hit teammate Ryan Suter signed with in Minnesota on July 4.

(As a note: the cap hit is figured by dividing total dollars spent by term, regardless if it is salary or signing bonus)
Quote:
According to Kypreos, the Flyers have structured the deal in a way that it may be impossible for Nashville to match. The breakdown would be as follows:

2012-13 (age 27): $1 million salary + $13 million signing bonus (league maximum $14M)
2013-14 (28): $1 million salary + $13 million signing bonus (league maximum $14M)
2014-15 (29): $1 million salary + $13 million signing bonus (league maximum $14M)
2015-16 (30): $1 million salary + $13 million signing bonus (league maximum $14M)
2016-17 (31): $4 million salary + $8 million signing bonus (total $12 million)
2017-18 (32): $4 million salary + $8 million signing bonus (total $12 million)
2018-19 (33): $6 million salary
2019-20 (34): $6 million salary
2020-21 (35): $6 million salary
2021-22 (36): $6 million salary
2022-23 (37): $3 million salary
2023-24 (38): $1 million salary
2024-25 (39): $1 million salary
2025-26 (40): $1 million salary
TOTAL: $110 million

If you weren't already aware, the Schenns train with Shea Weber in Kelowna. Luke was his roommate in Shea's last year there.

Maybe Holmgren knows NSH won't match it?

Two possible outcomes:

1.) We get Shea F'ing Weber
2.) We do Nashville a huge favor, but we also prevent him from going anywhere else.

I'll bet this contract is as front loaded as a contract can be and the Flyers have at least some inkling that the Predators won't match.

We'll see.

I am so terribly confused.

If Weber doesnt want to be in Nashville, I dont understand why he would agree to this knowing that the Preds could just match...

It cant be that simple, can it?

Makes negotiating with the Preds easy though doesn't it? If they weren't offering what you wanted, you allow another team to do the negotiating for you.

Holy Jebus.

The Preds will match, but that's crazy.

There is certainly a reason why Holmgren does that. Either he knows Nashville won't match, or he has a plan for something, a deal with Nashville, I don't know.

We'd lose 4 1sts, though, but it's definitely worth it.

Easily.

I have to think the Flyers believe that the Predators won't match? Whatever... no harm in trying I guess.

Worst case scenario is that we just blocked any rival from ever acquiring Shea Weber.

Just a heads up lots of people spreading incorrect info.

Only 5 years is used for finding compensation so the total money averaged out over 5 (being the contract is 5 or longer) determines compensation.

4 first round picks if unmatched.

Likely has to do with the next CBA.

Also, it adds cost certainty to the Flyers, which is a plus. The fact that Dreger is also reporting the Preds had been in trade talks makes this even more hilarious, particularly if the other team is an Eastern conference rival.

As has been stated, we either get Weber our we prevent any rivals from getting him. This is actually a brilliant move. Plus, since we tend to do well every year, maybe some of those picks will mean less (and Homer then cannot trade our 2nds!!!)

They could also work out a deal with Nashville. Possible NSH won't want to retain him if they know he wants out.

This will be the most front loaded contract in history. I could see him making the max ( 14 mill?) his first 5 years or whatever.

Exactly. IM fine with weber staying with nash the rest of career. Id prefer him with the flyers though.
