Claude was back home for the Canada Day weekend.. had the pleasure of talking a bit with him.. Take good care of this gem of a hockey player.. Plus Claude is an amazing kid.. He gave back 10,000$ to his local foundation here in Hearst. (his home town).

I can't see the Preds not matching this offer...

and this means the Preds can't trade him to the flyers.. I'm i right aobut this?
It means Preds can't trade him for a whole calendar year from when they match to anyone. And to be honest, I don't Giroux will ever get to the RFA stage, he'll be extended the minute Homer and him can talk about an extension.

Not anymore. If Nashville had any $, I'd start getting real concerned about their revenge in the form of a 2013 Claude Giroux offer sheet...

While I can agree with you, you're wrong. It's not like we signed G'ed to 3.5 this year. We will lock G up and nobody else even needs to worry about this. And I don't see him as a money hungry guy. G is awesome!

No way we can afford that. That has to be at least 30 million in dedicated cap space to the defense, not including Lilja...

Got home from a movie, saw the news. At first, I was like this:

Then I thought about the combination of nads and lunacy that Holmgren possesses, and I was like this:

And if Nashville lets Weber go for picks seven days from now, I will be like this (and I realize I only have used this after victories in the past, but this is the most special of circumstances):

Also, it adds cost certainty to the Flyers, which is a plus. The fact that Dreger is also reporting the Preds had been in trade talks makes this even more hilarious, particularly if the other team is an Eastern conference rival.

As has been stated, we either get Weber our we prevent any rivals from getting him. This is actually a brilliant move. Plus, since we tend to do well every year, maybe some of those picks will mean less (and Homer then cannot trade our 2nds!!!)
If the Preds match the offer can they still trade him?

Flames fan here:
I have a feeling that this was not out of the blue offer sheet. I believe holmgren and Poille have been talking for a while now and holmgren kept making offers and Poille kept saying no until Poille finally said if you want him so bad give us the maximum of four 1st's. So instead of a offer sheet I feel it's like a pre made trade where Poille said if you give us the 4 first rounders we won't match. That is why I believe nashville won't match. Also to be honest I don't like the flyers really at all but if you guys to end up with Shea a congratulations is in order, the guy is my favourite D in the entire NHL and a absolute beast and in no way do I find 4 first rounders a over payment.

It appears to be an either/or situation from a brief review of the clauses indicated in an earlier post. Either Nashville matches it or he becomes Flyers' property. If the Predators match, he cannot be traded to any team for a full calendar year.

And what's going to happen to the cap next season? Do we trade Mez or trade Timonen to a winning team maybe (if not us and making room elsewhere!?).

So he is either a Flyer, or never coming to the Eastern Conference?

sounds good to me

but can you imagine:

Weber-Coburn
Timonen-Mez (good season or even like last)
Grossman - Shchenn

Bryz - good season

Cap issue or going for the cup balls to the wall?

disclaimer: quite a few beers deep
I dont want to trade him, but right now the Flyers are 7 and change under the cap with Voracek still needing to sign. that is likely chooped in half. Yes we can use Pronger's LTIR money but that cant be used until day 1 season. the Flyers would likely have to clear some space.
You dont think they would do something silly and waive Shelley do you?

it may all end up being a moot point anyway.

Now speculation has begun Homer structured the contract to where Weber would be owed 26 million over a single calender year.

Nashville ownership is not gonna pay 26 million bones to a single player over a calender year.

For the Flyers, it's another bit of creative accounting from GM Paul Holmgren, as this deal will have been signed before Weber turns 27, hence it takes him right up to 40 years of age. Remember: "The salary cap hit for any contract that is five years or more in length and takes a player to his 41st birthday or beyond will be determined by the average of the yearly salaries only until the year in which the player turns 40."

It's also a genius move for Holmgren.

Assuming Pronger's done, the Flyers were looking at Kimmo Timonen with one year left on his deal at 37 years old; Braydon Coburn signed through 2016; Luke Schenn signed through 2016; and two more years of Andrej Meszaros.

(Speaking of Timonen: Wonder what kind of lobbying he and Scott Hartnell did with their former Nashville teammate?)

Weber is a game-changer if his deal goes through; an elite defenseman, a strong leader and an offensive force. The Eastern Conference has just witnessed a seismic shift in power.

My guess is the offer sheet has to be distributed to Central Registry and even the PA and considering the time of day, staffing is probably unavailable. It's likely something done during normal business operations.

Pronger's money wouldn't matter though since you can go 10% over the cap anyway right?

Anyone think if Nashville doesn't match, they trade the firsts back to Philly for players/prospects similar to what they were asking for?

No chance in hell

If they don't match the offer, this will probably be the last time we ever talk to the Preds management
