Fehr must LOVE this. He should walk into the room at the next meeting and say "why don't we make this a 14 year deal?"

It would be close to a third of their internal budget on 1 player.

Nashville had held off and has tried to get Weber signed to the best deal for him and the team. Nashville doesn't spend to the cap. They are closer to the floor than the ceiling. This puts them in a bind, do they let their franchise player go for draft picks, or match the deal which will more than likely bite them in the ass one day? It's a crappy situation to be in.

Though it's fine rules wise, it's pretty busch league. How would you feel if a team signed Couture to a similar deal when he reaches RFA? I know Wilson would hate it.

That's a lot of real-dollar cash to pay for a better return though.

If Nashville was already trying to trade him, I don't think they're going to match.

More specifically, I bet the Flyers have given him the type of contract they know the Preds can't/won't match.

There have been articles that said he thought it was the age at signing of the deal, which pronger was 34, not when the contract starts

OP clearly states it is 4 1sts. So does the CBA.

True, but getting a contract sans NTC/NMC might be in Nashville's favour. I think this is probably one of the best things that could have happened for them.

He was never gonna be a UFA in 12 months. Nashville would have traded him if they couldn't sign him long term and whoever they traded him to would have gave him one of these contracts.

Yeah, I can't imagine Bettman, Leonsis, Jacobs, Leipold or anybody else on the negotiating committee is going to be thrilled with Snider on the CBA strategy teleconference tomorrow morning.

Damn, good point. I was just trying to find any glimmer of a silver lining to this as a Flyer hater.

Preds will match.

They still have the option to trade him in the future, and it will be worth a lot more then 4 20-30 picks.

So you balance it out with getting some salary players for a couple years until his real salary goes down. Then he'll be in his prime.

I dont think the relationship between Poile and Holmgren is completely ruined. People should realize that there was a very real chance of Weber signing a 1 year deal and walking next July 1st like Parise did.

From Dreger's tweets, it seems as if Holmgren had a deal lined up for a few weeks, Poile dragged his feet, and Holmgren said, "I cant wait forever".

I wouldnt be shocked if Holmgren told Poile that an offer sheet was coming if he didnt get a decision soon. In fact, I wouldnt be shocked to see another Chris Gratton scenario-- Poile doesnt match, then Holmgren and Poile work out a deal that Poile likes and they return the four 1st rounders for Voracek+whatever else Poile wants.

To assume this was some blindside play by Holmgren is a little naive. This is a situation that has been speculated on by fans-- I'm sure the Preds were aware that this was a possibility.
I thought of that, but Poile probably isn't happy for a couple reasons. For one, he probably wouldn't have structured it like Holmgren has, which makes it a tough pill to swallow. Two, probably wouldn't have been such a long-term deal. Three, if they were to trade him, compensation would've been a lot more than four firsts(although if they wanted to keep him, this doesn't matter). Most importantly, though, they had a ton of leverage and probably could've gotten him signed cheaper. Unless Weber wanted out, in which case Holmgren did them a favor.

Still, a lot of it's the gesture that stings. If they were in serious trade talks where the Preds get back Couturier, Voracek+++, trying to go around that because they dragged their feet a little probably won't be cool with Nashville. Hell, Edmonton did Burke a favor by giving up 1+2+3 for Penner, yet he was furious about it.
