hopefully not

interesting twist…this may mean the Flyers are willing to bury a big contract, a contract signed just a year ago, to the Phantoms
what is he talking about?

The higher it is, the harder Nashville has a chance to match.

It's still less than Ovechkin makes per year. I'll take it.

Grossmann signed like months ago, not a year.

And no team is burying a top 4 defenseman. How idiotic is that?

Is he talking about a current Flyer? Only players we signed last year that I can think of are Talbot and Lilja, neither of which are big salaries. We signed Coburn and Grossmann to extensions but sending them down doesn't make any sense

They have the most cap space in the NHL and he is their only superstar aside from Rinne. It would be like a Rick Nash in Columbus situation I would suspect. They would overpay for the talent, and perhaps wind up trading him. They just proved to the league this season that they are willing to spend on the team to produce a winner, after matching and spending on another season, they might be able to persuade him to remain in Nashville.

Flyers wouldn't bury Grossman. Bryz has a NMC. Doubt Coburn is buried. Meszaros could be traded somewhere

Just like we speculated with the Parise/Suter debacle...

Holmgren has made is so that either he wins or nobody (of importance) wins.

Other than trading for rentals and giving rinne an extension and gaustad an extension, what have they really done to prove they are willing to spend?

Let Suter walk for nothing?

All that said, a Flyers source just told me it is out of their hands now, and the Flyers have a plan to fit all that money into this cap...I am hearing the Flyers could be looking to send some serious money to Adirondack to make the needed space for this deal. It is also very possible the Flyers would put a trade together with the Preds which would send some of the players the Preds have been discussing via trade for futures...Of course this hasn't been discussed.

If the Preds match I firmly believe this also would open the door to a Bobby Ryan trade..one source hinted this has been holding that up as the Flyers have been trying to make a trade with the Preds.

They offered Suter a lucrative deal, he left because he wanted to leave, but they have been making moves and spending more money than they have in a while. They don't really even have to prove that they are willing to spend to match the offer sheet, because they are well below the cap and need to spend the most this offseason. They have to spend, what better way than to retain their star they have been wanting to sign long term on an already laid out dream contract? Frontloaded or not, I am sure they are happy with the term and cap hit. At the end of the deal, you are spending the same amount regardless, not to mention he becomes one of the most valuable commodities in the NHL if that first year is indeed frontloaded as much as some speculate. They could get a fortune and just about every team in the NHL will be interested now.

Should definitely be interesting. I'm just wondering if Nash would be able to pay all of that extra the first year while still trying to be able to make the floor.

I'm no expert here, but wouldn't the possible lock-out keep Nashville from matching this deal. Obviously it's a pipedream for the Flyers to get Weber, but with a possible lock-out on the horizon, why would Nashville pay Weber 26 million over the next year while losing revenue?

I feel like some sort of deal was worked out between Poile and Holmgren... this is just strange...

And that offer sheet ended up being a big favour to us. But now that you've wrecked our delusions dreams of getting Weber, oh boy is our revenge coming. Every RFA from now until the end of time will be sheeted and summarily overpriced.

But wow is that a lot of money. I wish our GM had thought of it first. Dammit.
