Any news on Winchester or Gilroy?

Out of curiousity...
Of our unsigned players from last year -- I've really heard nothing on either of these guys?

I know a lot of people talk like Gilroy is 'gone'... but he hasn't actually signed anywhere else yet, and Murray was constantly talking on him being a project post-trade which would imply that he had intentions of resigning him during the season (plus he got more games I think than Carkner over that period).

I also can't recall what Winchester's health status was at the end of the playoffs.

So have there been any formal updates regarding either of these guys? Or just a news black hole?

Winchester is not coming back. He was a good role player but has lost out to skill and youth.

Gilroy sucks so....

Winchester would be nice to bring back but he got his bell rung again against the Rangers. Fragile noggin' makes him somewhat of a liability I'm guessing.

As for Gilroy, I think even as projects go we could do better. This past year may have been his last chance to catch on somewhere. He should probably start learning a European language.

Jim O'Brien > Jesse Winchester
Mike Lundin > Matt Gilroy

Okay... so most recent I can find are from our favourite 'journalist'

Garrioch articles about both roughly two weeks ago:
http://www.ottawasun.com/2012/07/04/...waits-for-bite
http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL.../19940856.html

So reading between the lines of quotes (assuming of course Garrioch hasn't pulled them out of context or altered them), it does seem Murrray's given up on Gilroy (otherwise I can't think of who the third D we lost is) and while Winchester is 'healthy' now, we'd need to make a trade to open a spot to him. Guessing he'll at least get a training camp invite if not signed elsewhere by then. Be one of those 'good faith' gestures, so that maybe another team even might see him to grab him as he'd be able to prove he's back to regular health.

This really sucks for Winchester, I love the guy's gutso. But in all honesty, concussions are not something to be taken lightly and maybe he's better off taking time away from the NHL, health trumps everything else.

I'm a little surprised Gilroy is not being re-signed, the Sens could use another right shot offensive defenceman who had 18 pts last yr & I would have thought perfect for Maclean's system. I assume that Lundin can play the right side but as it stands now Ottawa only has one legit right shot defenceman (Karlsson) & Gonchar who shoots left but prefers to play on the right.

An offensive defenseman on a 24 pt pace (best pace of his career) isn't really all that inticing, espesially when his pace droped after coming to Ottawa.

Gilroy brings nothing to the table and makes Alex Picard look like a Norris Dman.

I would personally still like to see him back. Great 4th line centre that sticks up for his teammates and seems well-liked in the locker room. That's purely because I like him as a player, not because I think he fills a pressing need.

I never understood other fans love for Winchester. The guy is a borderline NHL player that will probably spend the rest of his career in the AHL as a "veteran." I cannot recall one time I ever watched a Sens game and was like "WOW!" over something Winchester did. He simply existed (imo anyway).

He was pretty damn good along the boards. Almost Peter Schaefer good.

Agreed, winchester is the best checker in the league, if we dont replace him with the second best checker in the league we won't make the playoffs.

His boardwork is masterful. He's the best battler we've had on the walls since Schaefer.

Has Winchester been officially medically cleared to play next season? Even if he has, for his own good he should take it very, very slow.

Same here. Good along the boards, but that's about all he added.

Best move Murray made this offseason was severing all ties with Matt Gilroy. Thank Jebus. What a brutal trade that has turned into.

Winnie is your perfect energy guy. He hits, he's great along the boards, responsible in his own end, and not talented enough to make big money. I think he's got a bit of Neil in him - he'll just go '**** it' and hit everything in sight. I'd like to see him back as a 13th forward, although given his health concerns, he's more likely getting a PTO.

Really??...Murray just traded one bucket of pucks for another bucket of pucks....Lee had no future here either...it was worth rolling the dice and getting a free look at a player

He had a 3.8 shooting percentage last year.
3.4 the year before.
2.6 the year before that.
2.6 the year before that.

i'm all for an energy guy, but if i'm signing a guy who's pretty much guaranteed not to score more than 5 goals in a season, he better be a selke calibre forward or a big shutdown dman.
