How happy are you now that we signed Special K, given what Holmgren just did offer sheeting Weber? Especially to such a great deal! Go Murray!

P.S. Not that I think EK would have signed an offer sheet, as his link to Ottawa and Alfie is very strong, but then, I didn't think Weber would have either.

Honestly, considering that the cap not likely to rise much over the next few years, the term, the age and make-up of the team, and comparing contracts of the other big name defensemen... We got a really fine deal for Karlsson.

Another thing I'd like to note: Although he was signed already a few years ago, I didn't think Spezza's contract was worth it -- I'm a huuuuge Spezza fan, I always take him first in every draft, but through an economical perspective, he should have been about 1m less -- but Murray played it pretty well. He knew Spezza would develop, probably realized the cap would rise, and so I believe now Spezza is more than worth his contract.

Honestly, we have the formula of a perfectly built foundation:
#1C = 10% of cap (And not a fake #1C)
#1D = 9.2% of cap (Again, a legit #1D)
#1G = only 4.5% of cap.

Gives us 75% of the cap to find help. My theory, it should look something like this:
#1C = 10%
#2C = 7%
#3C = 5%
----------
Top 4 wingers should total about 20% of total cap
----------
Bottom 6 should total about 15%
----
#1D = 10%
#2D = 7.5%
#3D and #4D = 6% each
#5D and #6D = 3% each
-------
Goalies should = about 6%

Plus room for about call-ups ~3%

In my theory, I think that gives you a good balance, good players, no overpaid areas (like a certain $7.5m LW we used to have, hmmmm) And we are following this plan really well

Happy with Karlsson for 6.5 no doubt. I think had we waited an extra day he could have gotten more. Good to see players commit to the club that drafted and developed them.

Happy before and even happier now. 14 years is way to long to commit to a player.

After seeing Weber's deal, and seeing what Karlsson did last season, we got him locked into a really nice deal. Weber gets double the length and $1.3M more. Karlsson is 22 years old and already has a Norris Trophy and a PPG season under his belt. A little less unproven but his best season (this year) was better than Weber's best season (this year).

In two-three years when Karlsson is putting up between 60-75 points per season every year and his defensive game is getting even better he'll be on an amazing contract. Really happy to have him and really happy it seems like he wants to be in Ottawa for a very long time.

We definately got a great deal.

But in response to some people expecting Karlsson to stay a 70pt dman, I think you're a little to optimistic. Think Meszaros in his last year here.

I'd expect Karlsson's prime to be a 50-60pt dman. With a few where he scratches at 70 points. He could prove me wrong and turn out to be a generational Dman but i'd rather be more conservative.

Holy crap. Wont the flyers have to give something like 2 1sts 2 seconds and a 3rd since because of his salary?

I think its either 1 firsts, 1 second, 1 3rd, or 4 firsts, depending on the exact terms.

Philly's firsts, especially with Weber, will be really low anyway, so I think Nashville has no choice but to match.

If that's all they have to give up to get Shea Weber, that's really not that bad.

It's 4 1sts assuming that the money is higher than 50M for total term and contract longer than 5 years.

You average compensation to the lesser of term or 5 years and I believe that it is 10M that kicks in 4 1st as compensation.

(so assuming 100M+/14y contract it'd be 100/5=20M/yr as the number to determine compensation)

giving up 4 firsts is risky business, imagine if this were pre-2008 for us, and we gave away Karlsson, Cowen, Turris (traded pick for Rundblad and then traded for Turris) and Zibanejad. Karlsson is already on the level of Weber.

Mind you we would have finished higher with Weber, but it's always a gamble when you give up four first rounders.

Over the first 6 7 years

86m for Weber = 13.3 12.3 average or
45.5m for Karlsson = 6.5 average ?

Well, why not both? Would be interesting if we had done it instead.
