I don't know if you are aware, but $26 million dollars is like a quarter of the worth of the entire franchise. It's just not fiscally responsible.

Agreed. That's what makes this such a vicious move on the part of Holmgrem. It's clearly structured so it can't be matched. Unbelievable the NHL would approve a contract with a 26-to-1 ratio between the 1st and last year.
Poor Nashville, they really had their financial woes exploited here. This is the only reason I feel like this was a dick move because its like stealing from a disabled person. Offer sheets are part of the game, but on another level I find it to be kind of dooooooshy. Nashville should take the 4 1st rounders(if that is indeed the case) and try to work with them to fill the holes left by Suter and Weber, whether it is by draft or trade.

If he clearly wanted out signing the offer sheet probably wasn't the best move since the Preds could match and keep him for the rest of his NHL career.. He probably would have been better off telling the Preds he wouldn't re-sign longterm with them and to trade him before losing him for nothing before he hit UFA.

The counter-dick move to this is to prepare a trade with another team, match the offer and ship him out.
Why would anyone think Weber wants out of Nashville just because he signed an offer sheet with Philly? Talks with Poile were stalled. The best way to get a deal done was to have someone offer sheet him, he sign it and force Poile to react. If Poile matches he gets to stay a Pred and earn big bucks. If Poile refuses to match, Weber gets to go to Philly, play with some young studs and earn big bucks. Simple really...he wants the dough and the contract before the new CBA. Can't blame him really!
if the owners wanted any sort of sympathy from the fans in the CBA fight, I'm pretty sure that all these major long term deals this summer put the nail in the coffin of any chance in getting it
I wonder what's going to happen in 7, 8, 10 years when the tail ends of these contracts start playing out and teams are stuck with huge cap hits on their books for declining players. Will the owners then cry foul about it and want to change the CBA again or something?

Question: Why didn't Nashville do what we did with Carey Price by bringing him to arbitration?
It's my understanding that because the Preds took Weber to arbitration this past season, they couldn't take him to arbitration this season. Weber himself could have asked for arbitration this year, but the team cannot initiate it.
