Just a few days removed from Wild Development Camp, Minnesota has signed defenseman Matt Dumba to a three-year, entry-level contract.
The Wild’s first-round pick (7th overall) in June’s NHL Entry Draft was impressive in his first Development Camp with the team. Dumba had two of the best hits of the camp scrimmages, both occurring on Sunday after the prospects were put through a series of grueling on-and off-ice workouts throughout the week.
The 17-year-old (he turns 18 on July 25) becomes the youngest player under contract with the Wild. He is still eligible to return to his junior team, the Red Deer Rebels, if he doesn’t make Minnesota’s roster this fall.
I'm not a expert on how these contracts work, so can someone explain the benefit to signing Dumba now rather than wait a year or two and start his "clock" down the road? I mean, we're still thinking he has another year or two of playing in Red Deer ahead of him, correct?

His clock won't start this season unless he plays more than 9 games in the show this year.
So, if he plays 10 games this season, his contract would be down to 2 years. This must m mean they want to give him a look, or they're just trying to get his contract done before the new cba.

The clock only starts if he plays 40+ games in the NHL. I'm guessing he might get a tryout. There's no reason not to sign him.
I guess we're gonna see him getting his first 9 NHL games next season.
Kinda doubt it, actually. He's so friggin young. I could see preseason but I don't think he sticks in the regular season. He'll be ready to step in in a year or two when our absurd number of one-ways start expiring.
