Petr Sykora

Didn't do much in the playoffs. It would be a shame if it stoppes him from getting another contract somewhere, given that he was pretty good in the regular season for the contract he had. 21 goals, 44 points and healthy the entire year, doesn't turn 36 until november and still has a good shot.

Do you think he'll get a NHL contract somewhere or is he "Samsonov bound"?

Depending on how the Semin sweepstakes plays out, I could see the Devils giving him another shot. He does need very specific conditions to succeed, though. Namely Patrik Elias.

This is probably the main reason why he hasn't signed anywhere. He and Elias have a bond, and I'm sure that he wants to make sure that, if he does have to go, there was zero chance he could come back.

It's not like he was great, and he's had a long career. If he really wants to stay there, just sign what LouLam is willing to pay. Unless of course there is zero interest even at NHL minimum, which I doubt.

Outside of 9-10 when he only played 14 NHL games and 10-11 when he wasn't in the NHL this guy has scored at least 20g a year since 98-99. Might be one of the most underrated 20 goal guys of the past 10 or so years.

Definitely.

Sykora doesn't play a flashy game at all. He's not fast and doesn't dangle. However, he knows how to position himself to shoot and makes smart plays with the puck.

I found it odd that he was a healthy scratch in the playoffs. I hope he continues on.

Sykora still has a wicked shot and his offensive smarts are still there.
The problem is, it was clear that 82 games and logging 2nd line minutes got the better of him by the time April rolled around.

His speed isn't there anymore and he's not defensively reliable enough - so there is some risk in putting him in the line up. He gets benched often during the 3rd period.

There's still an interest from the Devils, especially since depth down the wing has been depleted this summer, but I think they're considering other options and Sykora's willing to be patient.

I really think if Edmonton is looking at getting another LW that he'd be a perfect fit. Both him and Smyth can't play 2nd line minutes anymore, but if you had both you could see them share the role.

Who would his linemates be? He needs a guaranteed playmaker along with guys who are defensively responsible because he often gets knocked off the puck too easily.

If you give him the right center, beautiful things can happen:

How many goals did he score like this this season?

Put him back with his fellow countryman, Ales Hemsky?

Or RNH or Gagner.

This was during the limited timeframe where Elias was actually winning faceoffs.

But the point remains, he needs a good playmaking center to feed him the puck. His shot is still deadly enough to make it worth it.

I'd still take him back, I just don't want to see him eating 2nd line minutes again.

I don't see him playing anywhere else but NJ next season. I think he will be re-signed in due time.

He has one of the best backhands I have ever seen especially in the shootout.
