I am a little confused, why do they have to pay him the 26 million right away? Sorry if this has been explained already.

For a cash strapped team like the Preds, paying Weber $26 million for ONE season is not an option.
They were going to try and re-sign Weber, Suter, and sign Parise, but 26 mil is too much? You really didnt think they were gonna go into negotiations not thinking about handing out signing bonuses? Thats what free agency has become all about. Front loading and signing bonuses. Cannot wait for the CBA to fix that.

He was implying the Preds will match and then trade Weber in a year. That's pretty much guaranteed to NOT happen.

There are 110 million reasons to sign in Philly in this scenario.
Two signing bonuses, one when the deal is finalized the other July 1st 2013. If there is a lockout that cancels the season they will have paid Weber 26M before he plays a game.
Preds could declare bankruptcy before that...maybe restructure some onerous contracts? Or just turn the keys over to Gary B and let the rest of the league share the pain...
Essentially, but just so everyone gets it, the not matching would have to occur first, and then as a separate deal, the Flyers could trade players for their picks. It's not a special right or consideration, it's the same as any other trade. So if Nashville wanted Coots and Schenn for 2 firsts, not happening. In fact they probably wouldn't get any part of the Flyers young core. More like to get their paws on Meszaros because the Flyers consider him expendable. Philly would not be at gunpoint to get picks back or free up salary in reality.
Lol, the whole idea of the trade would be that Nashville gets what they actually want. It's beyond hilarious that people believe Nashville can't afford it. If an owner has to spend $26 million to keep Weber I strongly believe he will do whatever it takes to not let his team lose $30+ million. People are so quick to forget that Weber will almost singlehandedly lead this team to playoffs and that extra revenue. As well as all the marketing revenue he alone brings in. It's not as if Nashville is paying it all on one check. They have a year in between the 13 million checks...
As a result Nashville won't take on Philly's Expendables they will take what they want or they keep him.
yes, but do the Preds also own the arena? if they don't own the arena, then the non-Preds revenue (ie: concerts, other sports) doesnt go towards the Preds
WP suggests that the local government owns the arena, but I defer to any Preds fans who know for sure.
It really is a beauty of a contract. The Flyers did an excellent job structuring this contract and, as much as I hate these ludicrous deal, I have to give credit where it's due
This offer sheet is the ulitmate game of chicken. If the preds match it , it is going to really hurt them financially. Plus they are going to have to add on significsant more salary just to reach the floor. Maybe a team can give them a break with a high cap number low salary player but unless that happens Nashville will be lucky to survive financially for the next 6 years.
I think the thing to do here is just lick your wounds and take your losses and live to fight another day. I did not realize the finances of the franchise were in such disarray.

No. Nashville doesn't have to match any clauses like NMC or NTC. They just have to match the money, structure, and term of the contract.
Nashville cannot trade him right away because the rules of the CBA disallow teams trading players that they matched an offer sheet for until one year has passed.
