Very good deal for this year, but I have a feeling this is going to mean a much more expensive deal in the future. More evidence of Tambo bumbling along and not willing to make hard choices. If Gags plays with Yak and Hemmer and has a great year (which I think is going to happen), we just lost our opportunity to get him signed long term for reasonable $.
The argument would be, my grandma could put up 50 points with yak and Hemmer.

Gagner Hall and Eberle are all up for renewal next year.
We'd better hope Bettman pulls a rabbit out of his ass on CBA negotiations or we're farked. Rangers and Philly might offer Hall n Ebs 15 years at front loaded $150million contracts.
Once Nash passes on Webber we wont have to worry about that. Well from Phi anyhow.

It's hard to sign a questionable second line centre to a long term deal when you don't know what the salary cap will be next year and you have yet to re-sign Hall and Eberle. Way too many unknowns to make a long term commitment.
Exactly, it's a win-win. People would be complaining either way if we did sign him long term that he's a bust and will top out at 45 points. This buys us another year to see.
When the cap goes up to $80million a year, they'll have the space.
Do you mean Nash or Phi?
Nashville simply does not have the bank account to pay all that money upfront or they would have matched already IMO. Philly is out of the offer sheet business if Nash passes cause they will no longer have their first rounder for the next four years.

I disagree, let's let our players earn their big contracts instead of handing over huge deals to players like Horcoff & Gilbert, where we're regretting it for a long time. If he earns big $ and we can't afford it, we'll be able to get good value in a trade.
Hopefully Gagner will be used as a center and not bounced all over the lineup like last year. He's only 22 and needs a chance to grow still. Could be a good deal for him long term if the Oilers top 2 lines put up the points.
He'll play with studs on the wings all year and put up 60 points making him a 4.5-5 million player next year**
**CBA could change things
Oy, why are some people saying this?
If he scores 60 points this season, he is much more likely to be traded for a sizeable package rather than them signing him to a rich, long term contract.

I've been hearing about this sixty point breakout season for three years. In any case, if it does happen then you use that trade value to ship him out of here.

You must have forgotten that he was a 3rd line winger to start last year. Fact is he hasn't consistently had good linemates since London. Cogs and Nilsson? Are you kidding me? OR how about Penner and Cogs LOL.
He's gonna be between Hemsky and Hall or Yakupov and Hall or Hall and Eberle or etc etc etc.
If he plays 80+ games and doesn't score 60 points I'll be absolutely floored.

In that case say hi to your new second line centre:

And by that time the Oilers will be in a position to know if Gagner is worth a long term commitment; that is, they'll know if he can play competently between any 2 of the 4 skilled wingers, they'll know what the new cap is, and they'll likely know what they are paying Hall and Eberle for the next five years.

Three month avatar bet that he doesn't score 60. You game?
