Dear God, How I love me some John Walton. He's sharing "classic calls" this summer. The first? Ron Weber (wow do I miss that voice) calling Caps first-ever win -- 1980!!! -- over the Habs. Enjoy it here.

FWIW, from Friedman's latest 30 thoughts:
Quote:
1. Right now, the owners on the NHL's negotiating committee are Jeremy Jacobs (Boston), Murray Edwards (Calgary), Ted Leonsis (Washington) and Craig Leipold (Minnesota). (Brian Burke, Jim Rutherford, Bill Daly and Brendan Shanahan also attended last Friday's meeting.) If Leipold is there when negotiations resume Wednesday, it's going to be very interesting. I have no problem with what he did in free agency. But, players, agents and even NHL execs found it funny he could be part of a group asking for such huge concessions after handing out $196 million to two players. Wouldn't be surprised if someone asks him if he knew about the NHL's opening salvo when he offered those contracts, or what he intends to propose with the 13-year deals should there be a five-year limit on term.
I know Leonsis leaving one of the meetings was reported but hadn't seen anything official as to his actual role.

Just reading the 'thoughts' now; didn't see it confirmed before now, either, or at least didn't recall it. back to reading, bonus thoughts this week!

I thought this one was interesting. That kind of thought process definitely comes out in thinking about lines, but I'd never heard of a fundamental approach based on "forward pairs."
Quote:
19. The Hitchcockian stuff came when we discussed Edmonton's forward lines. In Dallas, Hitchcock once explained how he believed more in forward "pairs" than trios. For example, Mike Modano always played with Jere Lehtinen. The third could be rotated. Krueger wants to see if he can create a flexible, dangerous lineup that way.

That's what my rec league team does. The captain is originally from Texas and has seen quite a bit of the Stars...

The U16 team I helped coach does this too. The head coach, a Canadian guy, said that its easier to substitute centers if one is injured/tired, or to double shift the better centers. The forward pairs mostly stay together all season and become very familiar with each other..Works really well!

Leonsis interesting response to not having fired GM yet: "Itís not just how team performing. how fan base performing. Caps 98% renewals"

Did this get lost in the shuffle or did I just miss it?

I hadn't seen it. But there it is. Winning is not the top priority.

Hardly surprising. Of course one could try to win and make money at the same time. But that's a little more difficult.

Left out a pretty key part:

Quote:
I haven’t had to yet. You have to look at the arc of the team.
The Caps have 8 of their own first round picks in the line up, was 10 last year.

GMGM can't be blamed for Boudreaus game plan or Backstrom going 2 pts in 9 games. They lost 2-1 in game 7 of the 2nd round, a loss that probably wouldn't have happened if SOB was run as the top line, it was a game 7 **** DEPTH, instead he went full retard, Semin not even on PP1, and at points of Game 7 Ovi, Semin and Backstrom were on 3 different lines.

Thank god Jeff Schultz is in the lineup.

Gmgm key performance indicators.

-ticket sales
-season tix renewals
-avg ticket price
-promotional dollars spent vs revenue
-first round picks in caps line-up
-number of verbal middle fingers given to Pens' fans
-regular season accolades
-post season home games
-cup... Just cause it increases all of the above.

The crime isn't not competing for years on end. I can kind of understand that actually. Building a team has got to be tough and there are a lot of variables.

The issue is that we very clearly had a couple chances to really compete for the Cup. And management chose not to.

George seems as committed to him having a great NHL career as winning us fans a cup.

i don't understand you comment in this context. can't speak for others here, but i have given heart, soul, countless years & dollars to loving this team and rooting for them to bring home a Cup. as far from hating as i can imagine. but yes, it's disappointing to hear that ownership is solely interested in how many more dollars i'll give and not whether that devotion and loyalty will ever be rewarded.

I have never or will ever hate the Caps. I do dislike Ted a lot. I saw this transcript a few days ago on another Caps site and Ted's response is exactly what most of us suspected for years. I can't imagine what working for Ted is like. I actually have to feel for GMGM here. This team needs an owner that understands hockey and actually wants to win a Stanley Cup.

we have competed for the cup the last couple years, making final 8 isn't horrible, it gets tiring after awile but in reality its still good. and we did make the finals 14 years ago, that may seem like a long time but this is a 30 team league

Why feel for GMGM? If Ted says he'll stay hands off as long as the fanbase/$$ is strong, what more could GMGM want? Unless you think he wants another rebuild or something (or wants to trade Ovi... that would get tricky).

This isn't remotely a surprise to me. Ted apparently feels the risk in making a change is too great and isn't yet worth it financially. A bit... refreshing? to hear him admit it explicitly I guess, though.
