Couturier was a much better offensive forward than Staal was coming out of juniors. Couturier could potentially be a #1 center that plays Selke caliber defense. However, like Staal, he is stuck on a team that is deep at center so he might get pigeon-holed into more of a defensive role.
I don't really see Gally's ceiling being much higher if at all. For me he is also a risk because he missed the entire season and you're relying on hope that he would have continued to progress from his 16 year old season. We also don't really how his knee will hold up over a full season.
The Qmjhl isn't as good as the OHL.
I don't disagree on Galchenyuk's question marks. I have the same concerns as do most. It's just that he's seen as a more dynamic offensive forward. While couturier may end up a two-way #1 C. Habs are hoping Galchenyuk can be the offensive #1 C we've been sorely lacking for decades. Maybe he won't be, no denying he's still gotta prove himself, but that's his ceiling for now. Trevor Timmins has gone on to say he's ceiling is 'limitless'. So, we'll see. We're very excited about him but if say we drafted Couturier and you guys had Gally, we'd be high on Couturier. I guess I kind of see them as similar upside(in terms of impact) that it's pointless to even consider this trade.
Couturier is a quebecer... he maybe wasn't born or brought up but his
parents are pure quebecers.
i want a big Quebecer centermen in montreal that is young and talented.
Please, get over it. I want to win the lottery, when it happens, we'll talk about going out of way for nothing.
Couturier was one of the most highly touted prospects of the draft before and only gaine ground this year. Many have said he can be a star center. What, is Gally projected to be Sidney Crosby 2.0?
wow... i don't know who said Galchenyuk was going to be
a sidney crosby?
I think he said that Galchenyuk has a higher ceiling.
That simply means that Galchenyuk is expected and has potential
to be superior to Couturier.
and again he never said he will be but his potential and expectations say that.
im explaining why i want Couturier...
what is there to get over?? loll relax..
Granted but it's not worth the trade. I understand wanting Couturier, fantastic upside but I usually want players based on them improving the team short or long term. Not really based on nationality, friendships, or whatever.
Habs have selected Galchenyuk who seems just as passionate to play for the habs as anyone else. He may not be french or a habs fan from birth, but habs need that work ethic and passion, while Couturier has a solid character, so does Gally, so we should be happy with who we selected.
Couturier was born in Phoenix, Arizona,[1] while his father Sylvain Couturier played for the International Hockey League (IHL)'s Phoenix Roadrunners. Following his father's retirement, the family moved to Bathurst, New Brunswick,[2] where his father became General Manager of The Acadie Bathurst Titan of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Couturier played his minor hockey in Bathurst and calls the city home.
You want him just because he is French, you're one of the reasons why despite living in Montreal, I can't and never will cheer for them
no one is forcing you to stay in quebec.
if your not happy then move out and do us all a favor
and stop complaining...
we don't care what you think, or what you say loll
we like to have people from our nationality to play for us.
whats wrong with that?

Who is we? The real fans want a winning product not players who can say bonjour to people. When the team is winning, no one cares where they are from

You should visit the habs board from time to time.
Little known fact is that the majority of the habs board is french:
Now, if you go on the habs board, 95% will say get the best guy and not players by name or language. I think you forget this is a hockey board where we look at a player's talent rather than his nationality. I won't say much more in this thread, but we want the best players. Habs haven't won in almost 2 decades, we need to control our assets and maximize them, let it go
Alex Galchenyuk + 2nd rounder.
for
Sean Couturier.
if not enough given id add in another prospect or draft pick.. wtv.
stupid and useless i know..
and some of you will start criticizing but idc.
i just really like Couturier as a player and since hes a Quebecer
it would be nice to have him as a montreal canadien.
im not saying that this trade would ever happen.
im just saying it would be sweet if we can deal something
out with philly, like this kind of trade for Couturier.
id be ready to overpay...
In case the OP probably wants a French Canadian player instead of "Russian" guess what? Couturier is American and so is Galchenyuk.

please go read the Habs history before talking.
Hockey isn't just a sport for us.
you have no idea what it was like when we had
atleast 12 Quebecers in the team every time we won a cup.
so please before writing and complaining like an ignorant person
go get instructed on why the REAL FANS and NOT people like you
want Quebecers.
I'm not saying Quebecers would make us win he cup again but
if we would have drafted all the quebecers we passed aside
we would have one hell of a team.
Giroux, Bergeron, Perron, Gagne. i think all these players are way better
then players like Plekanec, Bourque, Gionta, Gomez...

let it go
Sylvain Couturier (born April 23, 1968 in Greenfield Park, Quebec)
you should know what your talking about before posting...
True...thought you meant Sean. Even so...my dad was born in Cleveland. Do I care...nope. I understand that you're proud of your heritage and such, but I doubt it really means much to NHL players

If you had all the best players from Ontario, all the best Northeast US players, all the best upper Midwest players, etc. - you could make the same list. Just like you could come up with the same list of "failed" Quebecers.
yea i kno but franco-ontarian to me is like quebecer...
he talks perfectly french like a fench quebecer. same accent everything.
he used to live close to my neighborhood, i don't remember the name
but he did live in quebec for a while..

ok give the list of quebecers that were ranked higher than the quebecers i named
and ill name you the U.S, Midwest and Notheast players that were ranked over
the quebecers i named ok?
i really don't think you want to go down that road..
you will be very wrong..
Neither team should do this. Galchenyuk has a higher offensive ceiling than Couturier, so Montreal should just focus on developing him properly. Couturier has already made an impact in Philly and fills an important role on their team, and Philly fans rightfully don't want to move him for...much of anything, let alone futures.
