How Much Will Kessel Make?

Please don't turn this into a Phil Kessel is leaving Toronto thread.

When Phil's current contract is up, how much does he get if he stays with the Leafs? How much does he get if he tests the market?

I say if he stays with the Leafs he could get something like 5 year / 35 million. Or higher depending on the CBA.

If he goes to UFA, I can only imagine what some teams would pay for him.. I think we could see some ridiculous contracts..

They need to lock him up before he starts thinking about UFA possibilities. He should make 6-7 million a season. If he goes to UFA, he'll make Parise type money even though he's not as well rounded (lol) as Parise.

North of 7 million given his comparables, probably more when you factor in cap inflation.

He'll get the term maximum under the new CBA, with at least a 6.5-7 mill cap hit. He's a primo player and will command that sort of salary.

He will cost the Leafs a lot more than that.

I say if it is a 5 year deal it will be around the 43 million mark.

As low as Briere/Statsny 6.5M and as high as Parise/Stamkos 7.5M.
The other question is the term - 7 year Burke contract or a 14 year retirement contract?

Do we have to wait til the end of the season to start contract extension talks???

Assuming so, if he were to equal his last season...7mil x 5 or 6 years is my guess. Another great season like the last definately puts him in the 7 million per range.

That's Sidney Crosby type money... 8.6 million a year. I love Kessel and think he's worth a lot, but I'm thinking closer to 7 million, maybe 7.5

I'd estimate 7 million a season but things can change.

Call me crazy but I expect that the comming CBA agreement may have an impact on how much Kessel winds up making...that and how well he produces over the next two seasons. Way to early to speculate.

8.6 per season? Maybe if he wins the Rocket Richard and Conn Smythe in the same season, probably need an Art Ross on top of that even...even then i'd bet against it being that high.

Somewhere between 6.75 to 7.5 mill probably if he can still get 75+ points in close to a full 82 games.

We can re-sign him to an extension next summer, I think??? (please correct if I'm wrong). In that case I don't think it's early to start speculating...

If the NHL changes the rules and allows players to interfere with the path of a players, it might affect the way he is allowed to use open ice, hence him being maybe a little less effective, if the rules stay the same his value increases.

I 'm just stating that if the term is 5 years they will have to pay what others have been getting ......now if it was a 10-12 year deal the average amount would drop down to around the 7.5 to 8 million amount.

Kessel will want to be paid a lot more then 35 million over 5 years. He signed for 27 million over 5 years in his current contract. Average of 5.4 million. So he will want to be paid a lot more than that!

If Burke is the GM doing the signing, he seems to do a max of 5 years on his contracts. Thus there is no cap circumventing whatsoever. Personally I would be shocked to see him sign for less than 7m.

Lets be clear.....I'm stating what he will sign for as he over valued himself before and will do so again. I do not think he is worth this amount in any way!

You make it seem like an extra 8 million over 5 years isn't much of a pay upgrade...

You are correct....Kessel will not see this as a huge upgrade in Salary.....

Me I say that he should only get 6.75 to 7.25 a year range.....

Pretty sure Kessel is not the same as he was in his years in Boston... Even if he is, he came back from cancer to put up 36 goals... Is it so much to expect more then the low-ball offer he supposedly received from chiarelli (sp?).

If this year will be another basement dwelling year, I don't see why he would even consider signing an extension. The Leafs have to show him that they can put a winning team on the ice, and he has to prove that he can be a prime time player on a playoff team. So far he has been a prime time player on a mediocre to bad team. Can he be a top dog on a team that has aspirations of not only making the playoffs but winning the cup as well?
