Because Ranger players play in Manhattan.

Why would a Yankee want to have to drive through the heavily-trafficked Manhattan every day when they are going out of the borough?

Has a Ranger ever lived in Brooklyn or any of the outer boroughs? Anyone know?

This has changed over the years. In the past many Rangers players chose to live upstate NY near the Rye facility. Lots of people especially family men prefer their kids to grow up away from the city. I believe in 1994 the only Rangers living in the city full time were Leetch and Messier.

The rangers now practice in greenburgh, only about 10 mins away from rye. So this change shouldn't be much of a factor.

I think a lot of it has to do with age, most the rangers are under 25, single, and only a few are signed for more then 4 years. I am willing to bet most of them Rent and don't own. Not to mention unlike baseball, football and basketball, many nhlers have offseason homes in there home countries, slovakia, sweden, russia, etc.

We really don't have many players who have been on this team, for more then 4 years. Just wait I bet now that Lundquist just had a kid he will be moving out of the city, and to some suburban area.

I think Nick Fotiu. He was born in Staten Island and played with the Rangers for 8 years, but not all of them were consecutive. So I assumed he lived in either Brooklyn or SI

Young, single and rich. Closer to work and better nightlife. Same reason I'm paying through the nose for a 1 bedroom on the UES.

The guys with families (ex: Biron) live up in Westchester since the training facility is up there and that's where they usually are on a day-to-day basis. The other guys with no kids live in Manhattan. Makes sense to me.

None of them own unless they live here year round. If they owned property in NY state their entire income is taxed at NYS rate.

i know mike rupp lives in nj. he's had a place here since playing with NJ and he takes the train home after games and talks with fans (ive been on the train with him) i also ran into him at the river palm terrace in mahwah, nj which is a prime steak house in a rich area where gary bettman and ilya kovalchuk visit (as well as many other pro athletes)

I think this is the answer for most, although Derek Jeter lives in Manhattan. He's skilled at finding his space and the media respects his privacy. How often do you even see parparattzi(sp) pictures of DJ?

Derek Jeter probably has the best PR team in the world.

Yep. That or I think he just pays off every person he comes into contact with, including ex-girlfriends and reporters.

I laughed, but aren't the Rangers a better home team since their players started living in the center of the universe?

For the record, Biron lives in Putnam.

But I agree with the point.

when u say "live" in NYC, do you live there during the season or call that their "home"? because most hockey players usually have 2 houses. one where they play, and another where they are from. there are exceptions like shane doan, and now parise and suter. but for example, gaborik lives in slovakia and im sure henrik goes back home to sweden. i doubt the players live in the city all year round. during the season it makes sense for proximity but during the off season, if most of your family is somewhere else, ur going to go there.

I'm pretty sure Lundqvist stays in NY.

He tweeted a view from his apartment in Manhattan about a week ago. If he goes back to Sweden, then I guess he's not there the entire off-season.
