I don't get it. Thought he deserved a look at least.

Obviously the Hartford staff disagrees, gotta trust em.

He didn't seem to want to play in our organization, and we got more for him than we gave up for him. Not seeing the problem.

Sucks for Hartford, but what can you do if he wants to play elsewhere?

I think with the past year and all the preparations going into the last 20 games of the season + the reuniting of the top line before that, there really wasn't time and space for Wellman to have a go at a 4th line spot especially with Torts not wanting to bring in "some random player" at this stage of the season. In the first half of the season there was the long road trip then figuring out the top two lines, bringing Hags and Mitchell in etc. then winter classic... no time! Some people say it's a waste to not keep him but it would be a waste of his time to not play at where he feels he can play at so meh, I'm looking forward to the 14 5th round pick

Edit: Hello, why does everyone double space?

Some posters, especially one in particular, has yet to master the art of the paragraph.

Guys, Please relax about Wellman! Yes he was a nice addition to the Whale last year, he has skill, speed, and can make plays....but he is a borderline NHL player at best. I watched him play in 6-7 games last year and he struggles when playing bigger players along the boards. With guys like Marik, Miller, and Yogan joining the fold trading Wellman for a 5th rounder (hopefully for a player with greater size) was a good move. How many undersized players can we carry? The league is getting bigger / faster and we need to keep pace. Just to give you an idea, a guys like Newbury and Zuccarello are/were noticeable on every shift...Wellman not so much ....and as dominant as Newbury and Zuccarello are at the AHL level, they struggle in the NHL. Wellman is an offensive player that would need to find a place as a top 6 or develop his two way game enough to play on the 3rd line.....I do not see it, he is a project at best, and needs to get much stronger to make the NHL as a regular but it is much more likely that he will be a career AHLer (a very good AHLer)

We acquired Wellman for Christensen and a seventh. We moved him for a fifth. If we need a replacement, it stands to reason that we should have an easy time finding one for minimal return.

some people will complain about anything, lol. A 7th and a player that's not in the NHL anymore eventually turned into a 5th. This is called good asset management.

Why would we go with a pretty unknown and UNproven commodity over established vets/guys that had proven themselves useful in Torts system? He didn't get playing time but it's hardly unfair.

Who would you rather see getting top line minutes in Hartford. Casey Wellman and Andre Deveaux or Andrew Yogan and Marek Hrivik?

Does anybody here really expect him to be an impact player at the NHL level? It's not like we have up a future 30 goal scorer.. Relax everybody

Cam Talbot has the same agent as Casey Wellman. Talbot hasn't signed his QO. They are reped by George Bazos. It wouldn't a surprise if Bazos feels Talbot won't get a chance to play in the NHL with Lundqvist and Biron ahead of him. Talbot just needs to sign his 1 year QO and become a group 6 next summer. 3 year pro. At least 25. Hasn't played in 28 NHL games. Bazos has a small agency.

Because the Rangers are a good team and don't provide an abundance of opportunity for fringe NHL players. Instead, they can sign with ****** teams like Columbus, or run overseas where they'll be the best player on whatever team they sign with.

no one expects him to have a big impact and most probably never saw him playing for the rangers beyond an injury callup. but the whale still need players and guys to help the younger players like miller and thomas along.

and last year it was a major problem that the only player in ct that we could callup was newbury. we were severely lacking in the forward depth department beyond the 12 regulars in the lineup. with gabby out and us possibly trading multiple guys for nash the need to improve that depth becomes even greater.

I'm not sure how a player not wanting to be an AHL lifer equates to the Rangers organization dropping the ball and not giving people "chances." Yeah it sucks to lose a guy who would be a nice asset to the Whale, but no one grows up dreaming of being an AHL all-star.

Sometimes it's the players, not the organizations.

Exactly. The fact that the Rangers are a good team means marginal or even better than marginal players will have a harder time cracking the lineup. While it sucks to lose guys who could potentially be NHL players, that's the price you pay when you are a playoff caliber team. This is the dilemma you want to have.

Wellman had a $850,500 salary last season. He got a 5% raise in his QO. Wellman accepted less money. Wellman's QO was $893,025

I thought we could've fit well in our bottom-six. I guess he just wanted a better opportunity to play and the Rangers helped him out by trading him.

Lilkely means we see a new fwd Signed to Hartford
Not necessarily a bad thing in the long run

New Hartford fwd ( costing only salary) and Floridas 5th round pick for Christ and a 7th rounder
Not entirely bad asset management
