The first 7 years of the contract ($84 mil IIRC) would be insurable. The remaining $26 mil due the final 7 years would not be.

$26 million over seven years isn't really that big of a deal. Obviously it isn't my money, but it still seems like the inability to insure the final 7 years of the contract and how it might affect the decision is a bit overblown.

Everything that I've seen has said bonuses are not insurable.

True, hadn't thought of it from being a bonus structure.

That's why the contract was built that way...as a further deterrent for Nashville to match the deal.

If it weren't built that way this was a no brainer that we had to match.

Dear Mr. Poile....how about starting to talk with Josi's agent? Maybe HE will be the one the Preds FINALLY can lock up longterm.

So Rinne doesn't exist?

I love all of the offers that Flyers fans are trying to toss out to get Rinne, too. Leave us alone. *******...

Poaching our captain isn't enough. Now they want to get Rinne and send us back the inconsistent Bryzgalov who has already proven to be terrible behind a less than stellar defensive system. Guess what the Preds will have if Weber leaves, too! Exactly...

Well that's still a hair early as he is still on his ELC isn't he? But I get your point. Don't ever let Josi reach RFA status, ever.

Glad I haven't seen that or I might implode. This is a trying time for all of us. Can't wait until this 7 day period is over so atleast things can calm down a bit.

Doesn't it feel like the more this drags on, the further out the door Weber gets? I don't think the money is there. Unless Brett Wilson steps up, the money won't be there. In my opinion the local owners need to sell the majority stake to Wilson if they cannot play with the big boys. Or we need to completely revamp our identity, which I'm not opposed to, but will take years and do possible insufferable damage to the fan support.

I don't read the fish wrap but they must be salivating.

Or we can except the fact that we're a small market budget team and just be happy we have NHL and hope we can strike gold like Tampa and Carolina have.

Honestly, and I hate to be all doom and gloom, but this may be the end of the NHL in Nashville.

If they don't match (or are unable to con Philly out of a suitable return), then I don't see us breaking 10k in attendance next year. Or the year after.

Those 4 firsts won't bear fruit for years, if ever. With Rinne, we'll never truly be bad enough to land any difference making talent through the draft. I think it's safe to say we'll never spend money on UFAs (unless Smithson becomes one). We'll just keep trolling along - somewhere around 10th. How many years will the fans keep this up before the support just implodes like Atlanta.

Make no mistake, there was support for the Thrashers in Atlanta. But years of mismanagement, poor decisions, and basically treating the fans like crap - the bottom fell out.

It could happen here.

I'm not doom and gloom. I'm just waiting for hfboards to implode in here when we sign Klein to a huge long term contract...

Don't worry, Klein loves Nashville and fully expects to play his entire career here.

Bigger. The best comparable I know of is Fedor Tyutin, and he makes $4.5m.

As vocal as I have been about my Klein hate in the past, he is getting better and better. At this point, I think he is a solid #4 and a fantastic #5. Absolute steal on his current contract.

Oh, and ThirdManIn, when I saw your post, I thought it was real for a second, and my first though was "I bet Poile front-loaded it horribly to be sure it was a illegal just to prove a point to the NHL"

Man that would be a twisted move.

Poile: "Hey Klein, want to help me prove a point?"

Klein: "Sure, what do I need to do?"

Poile: "Well, I'm going to offer you a contract extension. 14 years, $95m. It's sure to get rejected because everyone knows you'll never be worth that much."

Klein: "... dude... you don't have to rub it in"

Hopefully, that Klein contract includes large signing bonuses in the 13 and 14 years. Back-loaded!
