This.

Tim Thomas is a free $5,000,000 cap hit for a team. It cost them absolutely $0.00 in real money and only what they would give up to Boston to acquire this cap hit.

We will see with his trade what the value of a 'cap hit' contract to hit the floor is worth.

If I am the owner of the Predators and I am about to pay Shea Weber $26,000,000 in the next 365 days, I'll take the artificial $5,000,000 from Tim Thomas to offset the cap situation. I'd be all over Poile to hit the floor with the cheapest options available.

Weber has handcuffed his own team for the next two seasons but after that they will be in great shape to spend some money.

Poile and the Preds can give a big middle finger to the league for the Weber contract by really taking advantage of this loophole. They can also help their franchise by weathering the storm for the first couple years of his deal. I'm really interested to see how this pans out.

And when Tim comes back... He will have a cap hit of 0$ but cost 5 Million of real money.

So?

According to Doug Fluto from today's copy of the Boston Globe, numerous teams near the cap floor have inquired about Thomas, but are all waiting on the exact floor number from the new CBA before moving forward.

No, I believe whatever team he is with can choose to toll the contract and pay him $3 million with a $5 million cap hit like he would get if he plays this year or they can let the contract run out and he is a free agent.
