They haven't won anything with both having cap hits over 8 mil.

I'm not saying Kessel IS useless, but he would be if he didnt ever play defense, like you are advocating. What's the point in scoring goals of you don't help prevent them as well. Kessel could certainly stand to put in some more effort in the prevention aspect.

Correct, I see that now. Cap hit pf 8.7 mil. But my points still stands. Having players with cap hits over 8 limits teams ability to add more quality pieces. Unless of course you already have those pieces on an ELC. The NHL is moving towards needing young cheap quality production for success.

Wings in 08 had Datsyuk at 6.7 and Lindstrom at 7
Pens 09 Crosby at 8.7
Hawks 10 Campbell 7.15
Bruins 11 Chara 7.5
Kings 12 Kopitar 6.7 and Doughty 7
NHL success has required cheap-ish 1st and 2nd contract players since the lockout, but there's still room for 7-8 mil players. I know you're specifically saying over 8's, but ultimately a mil on the cap isn't huge really. If I gotta make that up paying my 4th line 333,333 less each, or for that matter carry one less guy in the press box, that's probably fine for a guy going at market at 8+
When you see all these cap circumvention contracts, it really does make you wonder what will happen to Phil Kessel if he hits the open market AND the new CBA doesn't have any stipulations to deal with these types of contracts.
Fact of the matter is there will be a team willing to pay Phil a front loaded, incentives heavy contract with great term. Hard to see the Leafs, under Burke's current philosophy pertaining to such contracts, being able to hold onto him if he hits open market and those contracts aren't thrown out by the new CBA

You need to watch the games. Phil is the most frighten player in the league when he has the puck along the wall in any zone and he simply tosses the puck away and gives up possession when the threat of being hit arises.
He will go to free agency unless we pay him well over what he is worths as is his history.

If Kessel leaves and Sequin/Hamilton turn into excellent players as is likely. Hamiltion will have 7 years to UFA and Sequin 3 years to UFA. This will be the worst trade in Leaf history. Worse than the Parent, McDonald, Niedermayer, Luongo and Damphouse trades.
Minnesota has an excellent chance to sign Kessel. He is a Wisconsin boy who went to UM. I an guessing he goes to Minny.

Sounds like a lot could happen between then and now but as fans we should prepare ourselves for the worst possible scenario.

It's up to Phil. But Burke hates those long term contracts. And Kessel will definitely get one from another team. Burke can negotiate a contract a year from now. He has to make his best offer and if Kessel refuses than Burke has to make a trade before the 2013 draft as Pittsburgh did with Staal.
Actually, I can see a Crosby-esque contract, where he makes $8.1 million a year, long-term, if he keeps steadily improving. He's only going to be 27 when his new contract starts, a 7-year $56.7 million contract takes him to 34-years-old, which means his next contract won't be 35+. We lock up an elite player for the entirety of his prime years in the NHL, and with the way the salary cap has been increasing, it could be a great contract for his value after only a couple of years.

That's a nice story. But it's simply not true. A player who is more productive every season wouldn't give up possession like you have just described. Maybe that's what you do when you're playing NHL 12, but in real life Kessel does nothing of the sort.
