Im thinking that just brought extra leverage back to Nashville from a desperation point of view.
I continue to assert that Nashville has all the leverage in their ability to match. If they can, they will. If they can't, then the only question becomes what can they get for the Flyers 4 #1s, be it from the Flyers or someone else. There's no leverage unless Holmgren buys the idea that Nashville can match for their franchise player but would prefer to move him for several lesser pieces, which I just don't buy.
Here's another thing I haven't thought of up until now. Since the Flyers signed Weber, they should have every indication as to what he has told Nashville as far as what he'll do if they match. If he's told them he'll hold out or that he won't be happy - and I'm not suggesting he has - then the Flyers know exactly where they stand.
Should: Stand pat, knowing we likely don't win the Cup this year unless Bryz does a 180. Watch the young nucleus build together and have room to make a major addition over the next 11 months if the right opportunity arises.
Will: Wildly overpay for Yandle/Ryan and/or Doan and still don't likely win the Cup this year.
I'm not even talking about the playoff sample size. I'm talking about the fact that our defense was awful through the duration of last season. sure, we lost Pronger early on, we were without Grossmann all season until he was acquired and Meszaros was mediocre at best when he did play, but even a full season of those 2 guys will not make our defense much better than it was, imo. Timonen is another year older, we lost carle (not saying much but he could still move the puck adequately) and added an underachieving 22 year old and a borderline NHL defenseman who probably isn't better than Bourdon, Manning or Gustafsson at this point.
is an OK D, but it's not going to get the job done. Maybe we improved in the sense that we theoretically will have a healthy lineup this season and full years out of Grossmann and Meszaros, but that slight improvement won't be enough to fix the defensive deficiencies of this team.
Since nobody attempted a financial analysis of the Predators to see if they could afford Weber, I took it upon myself to do so. Even if revenues rise 2% (I know thats low, but I feel gate receipts and whatnot may fall for NSH next year so I went low) and costs besides bonuses and salary rise only 5% (I think that's reasonable given inflation right now) and the Preds spend to only the cap floor (If they match the Weber offer, they're at 54.711 thanks to the Kostityn signing, floor is 54.2) they would be losing almost as much money as last year, not including the loss of interest they would have from not being able to bank the ST revenue.
Here ya go... of most importance, note the month to month dollars on hand totals... Having to finance that debt for the additional time minus the loss of interest from having that cash in the bank could easily cost them an additional million bucks a year.
